Is this an HDMI or S Video connection issue?

Ok first off I have a directv box connected to a rca dvd recorder via svideo, then the dvd recorder is connected to the lcd hdtv via hdmi cable. The issue i have is the wierd screen pixelation or horizontal lines that appear continuously through my directv channels. Is this a cheap hdmi cable issue, or s video issue, or something else I havent found out? I dont think the black lines occur through anything else, but im wondering if a new hdmi or svideo cable would correct this. Any help would be great!

What happens if you plug the svideo into the hdtv?

What happens if you plug the dvd recorder in with component or some other analogue connection?

Well when i hook the directv straight up to tv with svideo, it seems the lines are gone. yet when when i watch dvds on dvd recorder through same hdmi connection, I see no lines. I havent tried analog connection from dvdr to tv yet.

Might be Macrovision protection, if the device is a DVD recorder.
