I have to deal with this every day from 5pm till 1am.
I've been talking with the cable company since November, I dunno what else to do.
No, DSL is not an option.

no, what service provider?

Do a trace route and see where the problem is. in the tracert you did there is no server info, like name and location, this would be helpful to see if the problem is within your isp's network.

Also go to
DSL Reports web site and run their speed test and packet loss test, their packet loss test shows ping and packet loss at each hop.

I went through the same thing about a year ago and got nowhere, ended up canceling the service and using a modem for a while :( now that cox has digital cable in my area I have cable internet again and so it is working as it should, 170 to 350 kBs downloads and 1450mbps throughput.

Hound them, make them hate you, make it easier for them to make it right than to shrug and blow you off, get Medieval on their asses!

All I did was change the IPs to x's, there were no names and info.

Oh and the DSLreports speed test is still loading.

I have to wait in line for 30 mins for the line test.

On a side note one of my roommates just walked in my room, took my AXE spray back to his room, used it, then brought it back all without asking. wtf.

I have hounded them, we got so many credits last month that this month and half of next is free.

Is someone stealing your bandwidth?

You can get more from dial up than you get from that crappy ass service.

No to DSL because:

a) Its $25 more a month
b) the modem is $100+
c) we are near the distance limit

register and do the packet loss test and see where things go bad, if the problem is to your first hop then there is a problem with the line, either in your house or coming in to your house, get those tech to come to your house, they can hook up a signal meter to the cable at the box outside and also at each point inside where there is a split, move your computer to the room where the cable first enters the house, have nothing but the cable modem connected to the cable (no tv, no splitters) and see if it is better, hell, when I was trying to get mine fixed I took my lap top and cable modem outside to the main cable box for the building and hooked up to my socket, it was still not working so doing this ruled out any problems in my house BUT! you dont want to get caught messing with the cable box

Good luck man, I feel your pain :(

We always joke around saying CS was better using our old 56Ks.

No one is stealing our bandwidth. They just oversold in this section of town. My family has this same service back home not 5mins away and they never ping over 100.

$25 more? What are you paying now? Whatever it is, it is wasted money because that connection is useless. I would be pissed. Something similar happened to me and I called the cable company every other day and had them send out a technicial once a week for two months until, I assume, they finally decided that it would be cheaper for them to just fix the problem instead of d1ck me around. Not too much longer I switched to DSL and have been WAY happier ever since.

Oversold is bullshtt, did they say that to you? talk to neighbors, if they really oversold then they would have hundreds of pissed off customers and if thats the excuse they want to use then find out why they havent fixed it yet, there is supposed to be a certain number of clients per switch and if they "oversold" then they can easily fix it.

Did they promise you a minimum speed when you signed up? If they oversold, then your neighbors should be getting slow connection speeds too. I agree that you should talk to your neighbors and see if they have cable internet service, and if its slow.
