Is this a WinME problem, FAT32, or some other thing?

We have two working computers in my home (a third works but will never be used until we get a better monitor, too dark) One is mine, Runs very nicly, and the other is my mothers. Her computer is a HP (Hewlete packard) 700 MHz Celeron, 64 mb SDRam, 20Gig hd (fireball, or quantum, something like that), burner, Integrated 2mb vid card. Now as time progresses, the computer keeps on getting slower, and slower, and slower. We've defragmented it, but with no avail. Even the internet runs slower then normal, can only get 3bkps transferspeed on a 56k modem, We have tryed 11mbps Wireless Usb but even when the computers are right next to each other we can only get 3kbps.

I think (without trashing it) we need to format the HD and put 2000/XP on it, Change the Mo/Bo and get a decent vid card and ram, and also get a nice AMD xp 2100+ or faster 🙂 (yes, im a amd fan.)

Since there really isn't much to go on I'm going to guess that 'as time progresses' translates into 'as we install more and more crap'. As such, the 64meg is gonna be painfull with even a handfull of background apps loaded. First thing I'd do is drop a couple more sticks of memory in and see if things 'improve.

A friend was having similar problems. Specs of the comp werent spectacular, but the thing was running like 10x slower than my 233. Everything was taking forever - 10 min boots, 1 hr scandisk etc. As it turns out, the hard drive was just giving out. It refused to die, but it sure as hell wasnt doing anything good. We replaced it and everything was peachy. Im not saying this is your problem, but might be worth looking into.

I'll make a different assumption on what you mean by "gets slower as time progresses". If you mean during a session it slows down you probably have the infamous Windows memory leaks. However, the solutions are the same for slowing down over a period of months. First step get rid of all extraneous programs. I would suggest a complete system reinstall but you could try deleting programs and running msconfig to see what's running in background.

The second option is to upgrade to WinXP (ME is a disaster) but you would also need to get more memory. 128 is really the minimum. With integrated video, I think the memory is more limiting than the processor. (You should probably download SiSoft Sandra and see if that gives you any insight and also check the HD but I don't think the drive is the most likely problem.)

That said, you are probably right that you would be better off replacing the motherboard. By buying a MB, you can save enough on WinXP Pro to pay for the motherboard and put a dent in the processor cost. For the application described, I would go with the ASUS nForce 220 board with integrated video, sound and LAN. I would also replace the power supply since the HP unit is probably underpowered. MB, CPU, 256MB, WinXP and PSU will run you about $350 and you'll have a real PC.

gotta go with others are sayin....drop in more memory, i'd say at least 256mb....if you do plan on upgrading, you can probably forget about using that case with new mobo, most likely it wouldn't work.

HP's can't be upgraded as far as mobo/cpu are concerned for the most part. Upgrade the ram, run windows 2k (XP is too much for this computer, been there, done that). This will help tons and you could even upgrade the video a little even if there isn't an AGP slot, anything has to be better than HP junk integrated video.
