I built a system for my brother using a K7S5A and Duron 1gig cpu running XP.
When new it had this problem occassionally but now its almost 100% of the time.
The problem: When booting its goes throgh the the bootup ok until you get to the XP bit where you have the dotted line progressing across the page, then the solid line. When the solid line gets to the end it just locks up. A hardware reset then fixes it and it boots fine.
Is this the well known K7S5a cold boot problem or a Windows XP problem? Can anyone give me any ideas on how to fix it please

I have a KS75A (almost the same setup as you, except a Duron 1.1GHz and Win 98SE...okay, maybe not quite the same!) and I had quite bad stability problems to start with, even though the K7S5A is supposed to be a stable board. The problem for me, I eventually found out, was the cheap DDR memory that I had. I currently have a stick of Siemens PC100 SDRAM that I nicked from our family PC, but I shall soon be buying some quality DDR when I have some money!

It may not be your memory at all, but it's worth a thought :) It sounds like it's a hardware problem as opposed to Windows, but not necessarily your mobo as there are a whole plethora (hey, pretty cool word for a saturday afternoon!) of possible hardware problems.

Good luck in troubleshooting your system :D

If you're only using one stick of memory (especially DDR) try moving it to the other slot and see how that works. ;)
