I just reinstalled windows XP pro on my Compaq desktop and I am getting a popup from messenger service and wanting me to download and use restorefix..

Is this a virus or spyware, Malware??

I downloaded Kasperky, spybot, Malwarebytes.. Ran em all but no help whatsoever..

This thing pops up every few minutes..

Here is what it tells me to do:

1. download registry update from restorefix.com
2. install registry update
3. run registry update
4. reboot your computer

Failure to act may lead to the following

1. Compromise of store personal info
2. slow speeds running or system failure

It's not exactly a spyware/virus installed on your computer. It's an exploit of the broadcast function of the Windows Messenger service that tries to pretend it is a valid system message so you will go install the real virus(es) from the restorefix.com web site. Install (at least) Service Pack 1 for Windows XP and it will go away. Don't stop with SP1, though. Get all of the available updates to prevent yourself from other vulnerabilities.

try something called smitfraudfix. just google it to find a download site. Reboot into safe mode and run smitfraudfix.exe. I used this on about a dozen computers that were infected with something similar to yours and it killed it out every time.

1) enable the Internet Connection Firewall on your current WinXP installation. How to enable the Internet Connection Firewall

2) download the full Service Pack 2 installer and run it.

3) After installing Service Pack 2 and rebooting, now install Service Pack 3 for WinXP in the same way you installed SP2.

4) Next, install Internet Explorer 7, regardless of what browser you routinely use in person.

5) Next, run Secunia's Personal Software Inspector and fix what it says needs fixing.

6) also see tips #3, #4, and #6 on this page.[/quote]

If possible, I also suggest getting a router to serve as your perimeter firewall.
