Is this a software bug or a windows one?

OK i was using my 3D CAD program called Rhino3D earlier today.

During one of the commands i get a pop up with this message

"windows has run out of memory, Rhino will try to undo the last command and this could take up to 30 sec", Click ok

I click ok and i get Rhino3D has cause an illegal opperation

When i got the message Rhino3D had about 510MB use and total RAM use was about 1GB so another GB of RAM to use?

I am going to guess and say it is a software issue right.

I'm going to guess yeah, software error. It's possible that the program actually did use up all of Windows available memory, but not system ram. There are some other memory pools for things like system objects like handles to drawing brushes and whatnot. You used to be able to exhaust these resource pools if you weren't careful about letting handles go when you were done with them, but I haven't heard of this happening on XP.

Hmm, I think you have your virtual memory set too low, if Rhino3D used all of that...just up your virtual memory.

Virtual Memory is set at 2GB so it didn't even get close.

i think it was an illegal call in the software which caused an infinite loop, as it did 200MB to 500MB in a split of a sec.

i got around the issue by doing something else though.

you're right. it sounds like a bug in the app. tell the company so that they can fix it. can you reproduce the error tho?
