Is this a sign of impending LCD failure?

I bought a DCLCD DCL9C 19 inch LCD from Newegg.com for my dad about a month ago.

It has functioned fine, but has now had two episodes where the screen image has suddenly collapsed and slowly faded to black. Turning the LCD or computer on and off didn't solve the problem.

I had to disconnect the power cord and VGA cable to computer. Then the monitor starts up correctly and seems to function fine again.

Is this a sign of impending failure? (power supply, back light, other?)

Everything is connected to a surge supressor, but is this possibily due to a spike on the power line?

I've e-mailed tech support at DCLCD, but am interested in what others at AT think.

Better description of problem:

Two episodes where the LCD screen image has started to fade (inwards from left lower and right upper corners) and the screen then just fades to black. Power light continues to function appropriately. Only way to get the LCD to function properly again is to completely disconnect and reconnect the LCD power plug and VGA cable.

RMA. Ever notice any excessive heat coming from the vents?

I would bet there is a bad componet on the pcb inside the LCD. Sure would like to
buy one cheap for home repair ;) Philips just recently sent techs out to replace pcbs
in the 3k 52" big screens sold in the US. I do recall reading that 2 months ago.

Be glad it happened sooner than later.

I contacted tech support at DCLCD and they think it might be a faulty power inverter.

Does that seem right and consistent with what I describe?

(I want to make sure I've got a faulty LCD before I send it in, because transit time each way will be 5 days and they will obviously have to open the case).

Yes, sounds right. The inverter going out would cause your type of problems.
I can find my lappy repair guide but have lost the LCD repair guide in my messy files or
I would post it for you. Just send it in and hook up the ol'CRT :) Be nice if you kept the
original packaging for shipping. Sorry I could not offer more.

Luckily, I have kept all of the original packing materials.

Seems like the prudent thing is to get it evaluated and fixed now.

Thanks for your input!
