Is this a sign of a fried processor ?

I have the following setup: ASUS P2B with Celeron566@850 running windows 2000 pro

Everthing has been working great until today. When starting up the computer would stop halfway through loading win 2k with a message saying that my Bios wasn't ACPI compliant. I have tried the following fixes:
1. Updated bios with latest bios update.
2. Changed every possible power management setting in the BIOS.
3. Tried reinstalling win 2k with boot disks, but got the same error during install and wasn't able to install.
4. Tried removing all pci cards/cd/dvd drives (getting desperate)
5. Thought it was the motherboard, but tried just for the fun of it to change the processor with a celeron300@450, and guess what !! That worked. I then tried reinstalling the 566 without overclock, but it still didn't work.
I don't have any problems running windows 98.

Is my CPU getting old ? And why would that affect ACPI ?

The processor shouldn't affect that... But just for kicks, try running the 566 at 566, but with, say, 1.65 V. My 566 doesn't like to run at 566 at it's stock voltage since I started overclocking it... But it's headroom when overclocked has not changed, so I'm not worried. Besides, it's cheap.

It could be possible that your mobo is not properly recognized by Win2k. Can you install without ACPI? You probably don't want it anyway.

Did you get a good bios clear between cpu switching. Some BIOS feaults may not be right for the different CPU, is always best to clear CMOS a couple of times.

try it on different mB. sounds like it's motherboard problem. run the comp with cel300a and take the cpu (cel566) to a local computer store (mom & pop) and see if it runs on one of their test machines.

I fried a Duron recently, had some similar, wacky, symptoms
to you. I thought it was the motherboard, but I took the
motherboard and processor to a little local mom-n-pop store.

They were great, tried the processor in another motherboard,
tried the motherboard with another processor. It turned
out to be the processor. They already had a new Duron
in my motherboard, so I paid my $60 and was on my way.
Not sure how I fried it, I was putting together a new system,
and I may have gotten a bad one. More likely, it happened
when my 6-year-old was "helping" and bumped the heatsink
with his knee.

A plug for Computer Cafe in Round Rock (near Austin).
Pretty new store, nice competent people. Makes me feel
a bit guilty for buying so much stuff mailorder and not
giving the local guys more business.
