A friend of mine is looking for an apartment, and so started searching Craigs List. She told me today she received a response from someone that sounds like a great deal ($700/month all utilities included). I've included the e-mails below.

I told her this sounded like a scam, and she seemed to agree. But I wanted to run it past you guys -- perhaps we're being too critical or paranoid?

Saw your ad on Craig's List and had a few additional questions..

Is this apartment a sub-lease and is there an additional parking fee?

Thanks so much,
Wendy

Hello,
Thank you for your interest. I have available the apartment located at [deleted], with 1 bedroom, 1 living room and 1 bathroom, square ft. 599. Because I moved with my job in United Kingdom, London, i need money to pay the rent here which is very expensive and that is the reason i want to rent the apt at this low price and to find a good person for it. I can rent you the apt for maximum 5 years this is the period i have contract here but i can rent it for a low period too. I`m the owner of the apt and it's exactly like in the PICS.

The rent for 1 month is $700 including all utilities (water, electricity, Internet, cable, parking, air conditioning, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, refrigerator). You can move in the apt in the same day when you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys but I hope that we will find a compromise.
Thank you for your interest and wait news from you.

Are you currently in the UK now and when would the apartment be available for move-in?

Hello,

The apartment is ready for you, you will need only to receive the keys and the contract to check it, and see if you like it.
Obviously we need a way to complete this deal (because im very busy here, and i cant come there to show you the apartment) that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after. I have a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the Keys in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by a company called TNT which is similar to FedEx, DHL or UPS, which will handle the payment and delivery of the Keys.

I have found a procedure that will allow you to pay for the rent of the apt only after you will receive the keys it and through this way you will see it and decide if you will stay in the apt or not before I receive my payment.

Please click on the link bellow to the TNT website to see how we can complete the deal safely and fast directly from the website of the company where the procedure is lined:

If you know the scammers, you'd know TNT is a shipping company that scammers like to use.

So yes, scam.

SCAM

Seriously, listen to Craigslist: Only deal local. Do not deal with people out of town. Never use Western Union, FedEx, DHL, or an 'escrow service'.

Not trying to be rude to you, I had some friends just get scammed on a flatscreen TV from the UK. How many times does Craigslist have to tell people to NEVER deal with someone you can't meet in person?

Ok so what exactly is the scam? He says you don't pay money until you get the keys. So what exactly do they do -- steal your information/identity?

the rule is if you have to ask, then it is a scam. why is it that everyone still asks?

While I'm not sure in this case here are some that I've heard:

You see the apartment from the outside (they even have pics), you get sent keys, release the $$$, then find the keys don't work and someone has lived in that apartment for years, isn't moving, and knows nothing about this.

They own a fake escrow service. You send the escrow the money, get the keys, realize they're fake, then when you try to get your $$$ back from the escrow, you find they've lost your order, or don't exist anymore.

Or, they set up a fake (overseas) escrow service, you send them the money, and they take it and shut it down. Why bother sending ANY keys at all? If you're gonna steal, at least do it in a cost-effective way!

To the jerkoffs in the thread...

this.

I answered this question in my original post. I thought it was a scam and just wanted to be sure, plus if you read a little further I am curious as to what the exact nature of the scam is. If it offends you so much, why would you click a thread that asks if something is a scam?

---

I'm not going to respond to everyone but thanks to all those who answered the question in a positive light, and weren't jerk-offs about it.

Ah ok, I'm not familiar with Craigs List. I was just going off what she told me and the e-mails she forwarded. But I even told her if she has to deal with someone outside the U.S. or that she can't meet, then don't do it. Thanks for confirming.

I thought there might be more to it than this - something more elaborate. But maybe it is just that simple. Thanks.
