Is this a really dumb time to jump jobs?

I really can't stand my job anymore. I mean one more minute there and I will probably lose my sanity. It has been a whole string of broken promises. Almost everyone below me has been sent packing in favor of outside contractors. I now basically supporting 100 users plus network, servers, PBX, telecom, and all office equipment (120+ faxes, copiers, printers, audio/visual equipment) alone. Since other offices have lost their network/IT admins, I unofficially support about another 100 users. I wasn't given a 6 month review. I was promised a substantial raise after my first year bu that was recinded due to "economic conditions." A quick check shows I make about 20% below market value just as a network admin. I have received zero training and everything has been self taught. As you can see I am pretty unhappy. I am so overloaded that I can't even being to see the light of day. I receive no support from upper management budgetwise. For the past 6 months I have to charge thousands of dollar on my personal credit card and slowly expense it to keep the office going. Most of it is due to equipment dying from the failed HVAC system in the server room. Temperature there hover around 85F during the day and 110F - 120F at night.

I want to change jobs but I am scared to do so. Some stupid sense of loyalty I guess. Some people there are so damn nice and appreciate my help that feel I cannot let them down. Unfortunatley they are the exception rather than the rule. Most of the rest are ambivilant. So what are the chances of an experienced network/IT admin (all hands on) finding a job in the Northeast right now?

Thanks for your time.

Dude dont feel bad about moving on from a company that keeps you stressed and treats you like sheit. im going to be moving in less than a week for similar reasons, (too much stress, not enough sleep/ time to my self) just make sure you have another job lined up before quitting.
Good luck to ya Windogg. :)

Well I'm not exactly at your level but I'm looking for a new job in networking, lost my last one cause they changed roles and brought some other guy in that I'm happy to say sucks and has made their computing experience hell, bitter payback, but I've been looking for awhile with no luck in eastern PA, and all I hear from anyone else looking too is that the market is worse for jobs and IT in general than it has been for awhile. Personally I'd wait it out a bit more and only leave if you have something else setup already.

Generally speaking its a bloody sh*ty time to job hop. If you are experienced and attractive enough, however, it might be ok for you. I'd recommend applying to some other jobs and see how many offers you get (not just intervie interest), then you can base your decision upon that. Don't leave this job unless you know you can get other ones in case you get laid off on the new one!

Friday was my last day on the job I've held for 6+ years. I can tell you it's not the job market it was a year ago. It isn't even the job market it was two months ago. I just decided my sanity was worth more than the money I'd have made if I'd have stayed on longer. I couldn't handle another month with that particular pointy haired boss.

make sure you have one lined up. don't jus dump this job unless you can manage to go a few months or more without employment. Have you considered other areas of the nation for employment?

I think you need to start looking for a new job. However, do not leave the one you have until you've secured a new one. Once you've managed that, then give your two weeks notice.

As far as your sense of loyalty, that's admirable :), but remember that someone will take your place, so that someone else will be there to help just as you did.

never do this! why would you have to? just tell them you need a corporate card or the systems are gonna go down.

i would try to get things changed before you leave, make sure they know how much you do and if you leave its gonna fall apart.

it is a very bad time to jump...but it sounds like you have it REALLY bad. start putting out some feelers to see who's hiring, check the classifieds, talk to your buddies in the field, talk to a head-hunter.

so is this a really dumb time to jump jobs? - yes
whether you do or not is your decision - in your position (especially using personal money for business...bad mojo) i'd take anything else if it was stable.

Yes, keep the old job, until you find a new one. Who knows what company's will do after last week. I bet most have a hiring freeze until things settle down.

Big mistake. There's no reason you should have to do that. Perhaps a talk with management would help (don't take any bull either, present them with your credit card bill).

I would start trying to find some jobs to interview. And, if you are getting a lot of positive responses, you might want to threaten the management that you will quit if you don't get a raise and more support(like a corporate card).

But of course, DON'T leave your current job unless you have another one lined up!!!

CC Cash back? Free gas? Air miles? :p

But if you have some savings you should quit, and not really worry about the job market for a while. Mabbe flip burgers 3 days a week or something just so not to get your money dwindle down too fast.

Just make sure you get all the money back from your expense forms before leaving :D

yeah, like everybody else says, don't leave till you find a new job.
I know I'm unhappy with MY job too, but I can't leave. I'm on an H1-B visa so looking at how
the job market is out there, it's definitely not a good time to quit and find a new job for me.
And considering how many java web programmers are out there too, my position is easily replaceable.
I'm just waiting for another year to pass as I'm studying for my GMAT so I can apply for college
(and live off my parents for another few years before reality hits me...again...;) )

but anyway, good luck to you and everyone else who's in search of a new job :D

Why would you have to pay up front for their office equipment? That is not your responsibility. They should have expense accounts set up or the ability to create one. Do they not have an accounting dept that bills can be forwarded to?

The only situation I have seen employees have to pay up front is on travel accounts. That way you are less likely to get crazy on meals and luxuries.

That makes it tough, but you have to do what is right for you, not for them.

Good luck.
