Is this a printer or toner cartridge problem?

I am sure that the toner is running out on my trusty HP LaserJet 1100A that I have had for years. But it also has this weird stripe running down the page (which happened to appear after I recently took out the toner to shake it).

Just wanted to get users opinions if you think it's just the toner or if the printer has a problem before I lay down ~$50 for a new toner cartridge. Thanks!

Could be a dirty imaging drum (green roller) inside the cartridge. See if you can clean it with a DRY lint free cloth.

Thing about laser printers is that most of the things that can break and get dirty to affect images are inside the cartridge. As you mentioned your probably low on toner as is so its time for a new cartridge.

in my experience cleaning the green roller is only a temporary fix (if that). whatever caused the roller to get dirty will probably do it again. as SKORPI0 said, clean and rotate it from the cog wheel on the side.

also, follow hp's cleaning procedure:

once you take out the cartridge, blow/vacuum the insides (but not the cartridge)
and whilst you're at it:

also try the thing on page 81
http://bizsupport.austin.hp.co.../bpl06116/bpl06116.pdf
that's usually for getting rid of minor specks and dots though

Well, I went through all of the cleaning steps (wiping the green roller two rotations, wiping the inside, removing and wiping the pickup roller, and running through three sheets after holding the button for ~30 seconds). Some of the little specs are gone, but the stripe is still there.

I do think it's the toner cartridge though. When I rolled the green roller, it was constant in the toner cartridge (as evidenced by the second rotation.

I'll probably be getting a new toner and will report back if that solved it or not.

Thanks everyone for the links and your help!

if the green roller keeps getting dirty then it is the cartridge. is it an hp cart or a compatible? we had kores replacement cartridges that had similar problem around 15-25% capacity.

This one is an actual HP toner cartridge. I am planning to get an Office Depot one though since it's $42 instead of $56. Would be the first time using one that wasn't made by HP. Supposed to be guaranteed to work.

for such a small price diff i'd go with hp but that's from experience at work (those kores cartridges were awful when 3/4 empty)

Got the new toner cartridge from Office Depot (their own cheaper one). Prints perfectly! Thanks everyone!
