It's a tinted photo. Very popular from the late 1800s all the way up to the 1950s.
The artist takes a black and white photo, and tints it with color.

Very interesting. We found a photo album back home in a linen closet, underneath a bunch of old puzzle boxes and junk. It's amazing to look through - just to see the clothing styles, the facial expressions, the backgrounds... just looking back and thinking what life was like is pretty cool.Originally posted by: Amused

Yep, I have some of my mother from the 30s, 40s and early 50s.
And her family has them dating back to the early teens before WWI.
