I have build a Athlon 64 system for one of my friends. I used MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum board along with Seagate Barracuda 120GB SATA hard drive. For the first time I used a SATA HDD. Now when I plugged this drive to SATA 1 port, then in BIOS it was showing as Third boot device. My Primary Master was none, secondary master was the optical drive.....and third boot device was Seagate HDD. Now when I installed Windows XP, then in taksbar (in the right bottom of the window), one icon was there.....when I double clicked that icon (was a gray square with green arrow) it was stating "Safely romove hardware".......and in that Seagate HDD was there. So my question is......is this normal incase of SATA HDD??....there was only single drive in the system and no RAID!!

The safely remove hardware icon can appear for several types of hardware attached, including hard drives.

In this case, it may have appeared because you had a Card Reader or and external USB/Firewire HDD plugged in. Or, it may have defaulted to optimizing your SATA drive for 'quick removal', which will slow the drive down.

To check, go to device manager, and under disk drives, select properties for your SATA drive. Then, click on the policies tab and select the radio button, 'Optimize for performance'.

Yes the BIOS will list the sata drives as seaparate from IDE...so expect the SATA 1,2,3,& 4 as dofferent boot device

I have a Neo 2 Plat...I overclock so my SATA drivers are on 3 & 4
In my initial BIOS Screen my 2 Seagate 200gb 7200.8 drives are listed separate(they are shown as the third and fourth device on the screen) from the my IDE drives..DVDRW and DVDROM

Now in windows because you are using NForce 3 drivers they list that stupid safely remove hardware icon in the tray...do not use it

if you look for Beta drivers ...the 2.7 ide driver the safely remove hdd icon will not be present....

You are doing fine....everything is working properly

No the HDD will default to optimal performance it is an issue with the Nforce 3 ide drivers version 2.6...disappears with 2.7 ide drivers....

I thought it was weird too..that stupid safe to remove hardware icon but the Nforce 3 2.6 ide drivers(? and earlier ones) do this..I was tinkering with some beta drivers for Nforce 3...and with 2.7...this went away

Eh, I have the same thing. Doesn't really bother me so no real reason to mess with it.

I follow the old guidelines...

If it ain't broke, dun fix it.

I'm kinda having a different problem. I see the icon at the bottom to remove a hard drive i just installed but it's not showing up in my computer. Anyone know why that might be?
