My friend has a Compaq and lately he has had an issue every time he starts it up. Sometimes the screen stays black and nothing comes up. Other times, it gets to the windows startup screen and to the menu where you choose to enter safe mode or not. And sometimes, windows starts up and give a message about not having been shut down properly. Now all this time, the keyboard and mouse do not work. They get no power and don't work in any stages of the startup. We've tried installing numerous different keyboards and mice and the problem still exists. I have come to the conclusion that the motherboard is the problem. Can anyone else think of another component that can be causing this problem?

Also, I noticed that its a MicroATX motherboard. Can anyone recommend a good one? I've been looking at Shuttle and ASUS models. He's had problems with his motherboard before when the computer was under warranty so a good brand is preferred this time. I will also purchase new ram since he currently has SDRAM. Thanks for your help.

Faulty KB/Mouse ports are usually a sign of a bad motherboard.

Check out the thread in my sig for the Biostar MATX NForceIGP motherboard. You can also get lower priced VIA KM400 motherboards too; search Newegg and check out the ratings and reviews.
