Is this a monster.com scam?

I was looking rather casually for a job online and saw something mildly interesting on monster.com in my city so I applied and figured I'd find out more and see what happened. The company was "company confidential" and the email address they listed as the contact did not bring up a website when going to the domain. When I clicked apply now, it took me to an odd application page but I figured it was just the way the company did it since they were probably outsourcing their search or something.

A few days go by and I receive a phone call not from the company but instead from some technical school called New Horizons. This lady talks to me and tells me that sorry but the company was looking for someone with "certs". I get the feeling that there was no company and no job at all. She talked for a little bit and offered that I could come in and talk to her. I figured what the hell. I had nothing better to do so I figured I could stop by and see what was up.

When I met with her, she basically was attempting really hard to give the impression of being on my side while totally undermining my confidence. She asked what I would like to make when I started full time and I replied. I would hope to get at least $45000. She was saying that based on my resume the best I could hope for was $10/hr. I was flabbergasted. I pointed out to her that I had already received an offer for that much and declined it for other reasons. I also could have mentioned how other graduates from my program that I am friends with have gone on to jobs in the range of 40 - 70.

She basically was pushing me to take their cram classes to get certifications. I have to admit that it was rather effective but I have a strong distaste for these certifications. If anybody can walk in with no knowledge, take a cram class, and get one, I don't think it is worth much more than the paper it is written on. I really have no intention of paying $2500 for a 5 day class so I can get one.

I guess I will be more careful when applying on Monster from now on.

Summary: I applied for a job on Monster. The response was from a certification cram school who proceeded to say I was worthless. The job may never have existed.

Here is the job ad on Monster (still up): Monster

you were probably right.. maybe just apply to companies you can research - you'll have a better success rate that way anyways.

Busted.

When you put your name out there, no matter who with, some people will try and use it for a scam.

Do not respond to any company that will not reveal themselves, and the positions they are hiring for.

Now you know better and can spot such obvious scammers.

And keep your personal info private until you verify the company.

Monster is also easily used for identity theft.

I just called and spoke with Monster.com. They apparently do take this sort of thing very seriously and the representative claims she will pass it on to someone who can do something about it on Monday. I would think they have to care since it dilutes the service they offer.

"company confidential" has been doing this for a long time now...you really have to look carefully at these applications...

yah, this is a fairly common practice... not saying it's right... after i put my resume up on monster, i got a lot of junk asking me to go to so and so tech school... blah blah blah.. just don't apply to company confidential companies... i got my current job at northrop grumman through monster.. i didn't actually find the company, they found me... so the system works..

Whoa, its larry... I didn't know you posted on ATOT. If you have a degree from UF I'd imagine that a few certifications aren't going to really boost your resume much by comparrison.

Actually, there is a training company up here in the NE called New Horizons, they offer computer training to companies for their employees and offer classes open to the public. I believe they also do network installations but I'm not sure on that. As far as I know they're not a scam company, but I could be wrong, or it could be an entirely different company.
