Is this a Half-Life or Steam problem?

Long story about Half-Life/Steam problems as short as possible.

1. Long ago I buy Half-Life on CD (retail). I don't remember registering it - I doubt it, but maybe I did. I play the game a bit and put it on the shelf.

2. I recently purchase Half-Life 2 via Steam Silver. I get HL1 free in the process.

3. My friend and I are looking for a good coop FPS. I find the Sven Coop mod and suggest it. I give him my old HL version as I don't need it anymore.

4. We both install HL - him via the CD and me via Steam. I tell him to update his game as Steam should've given me the latest and I'm sure we need the same version to play coop. He does.

5. We both install the latest Sven Coop 3.0 and the support to play the original maps. I launch a server. He can see it but he gets an error when trying to connect. Something about different protocol. A quick google shows different versions causing this.

6. I check my version and he checks his. His version is 1.1.1.0 and mine is 1.1.1.1. The most recent legit update I could find is 1.1.1.0. I did find some "nosteam 1.1.1.1" or something but it didn't work for him. Apparently 1.1.1.1 is Steam only?

7. I have him install Steam and create an account. He goes to register my game with my valid CD key and it says it's already registered and invalid. Like I said, I may have registered it but I seriously doubt it as I never registered software unless it was 100% required to play. I never played HL online so I probably didn't. Could my key have been generated? Anyway, on to the next step...

7. I tell him to login as me under my Steam account and update my old version of HalfLife. It appears to work but when he logs back in as himself it doesn't show HalfLife installed in his Steam list. Is there any way to "point" Steam to a game installed from a CD?

8. That's where we're at now. I'm out of ideas. I'm kinda pissed. I own both games legit. Why shouldn't I be able to give one to a friends. I'm under the impression that as long as I give/sell the original media it's legal to do that. I mean, what if I traded this game in at the local EB Games?

I can't speak for your CD-Key problems, but I can tell you that VALVe axed the WON servers used by Half Life (and mods) after Steam released. That's why your friend couldn't update and see your server.

Steam is 1.1.1.1 and the last WON version is 1.1.1.0
You both either need to be on WON or on Steam. And you can't use the same CDKey for 2 people. (on steam)

Edit: Play TFC :p

Can I downgrade my Steam installed Half-Life to 1.1.1.0? If so I'll do that.

We aren't using the same CD Key. My Half-Life was purchased through Steam. His Half-Life install is my old retail copy I purchased years ago.

Is there anyone I can contact at Valve to transfer ownership if my retail Half-Life purchase? Like I said before, what if I traded this game in? The person who tries to use it wouldn't be able to update. That's BS.

Well, if you've owned that retail copy forever you could email valve and wonder why someone already made a steam acc't with it.

Yep, I've owned it since it was purchased at the local mall. I've used the same account name (robor007) for years and I doubt I ever registered it because I only played the single player of Half-Life. I think I will Email Valve even if all I do is get them to cancel some punk's generated key. As usual, the copy protection screws over a paying customer. :|

Does Steam still charge $10 to transfer an account?
