heh... I'd go with yes ;) You should probably get a second opinion though.

You have a dark room?

Can you use any dvd player with a Projector, do Projectors have a place for cable or directtv connection, and do you need a screen or does it look just as good on a wall?

for that price you could gget a 42" plasma (which for the most part is better than lcd anyway) an di am not talking baout a cheap brand. for instance from costco.com you can purchase a 42" HDTV Panasonic tv for $1400, only $100 more and you get a FAR better brandm most likely more inputs, and plasma over lcd

it all depends on your projector. as long as you get a media projector then it should have standard inputs for all, most iwll have component inputs but i would find one with at least 1 hdmi aswell, then you could use the component for a dvd player and the hdmi for your directTV box
a project is harder to setup though than a standard tv and yes even if you painted your wall super white you do need a screen to view the best possivle picture and event hen you can go with a low end screen or a high end screen. lighting in the room would also be a factor (windows, blinds, etc)

I know at least one decent budget projector that has a DVD player built into it. The other ones have stadard inputs (Component or HDMI etc.) to hook up a regular DVD player or any other source.
Besides the limitation of needing a dark room, you're also going to have to get a sound system of some kind as you will not have integrated speakers in the projector.

You don't need a screen, but it will help it look its best. A smooth white / near white wall will get you a pretty good picture. I was using a blank wall before I finally got around to finishing my screen project

If you're interested in this idea though, you could get a pretty good 720p projector and a DIY screen going for the budget you're looking at.

This does not include receiver/speakers/sub, but that's really going to help you complete the experience and it's probably something you'd want to do anyway if you don't have something already.

Yes but it's overpriced for a non-1080p plus $80 shipping.

The Olevia 537H for $699 + shipping is a better value. Assuming it's still available at that price.

I used a piece of polywall, for a 96" screen, but It looked really crappy athstetically. So now I just project right on a wall. Looks decent, but it could be better.

YoYo,

you gonna be in the South sometime after the new year? I have a budget of $5000 to put together a projector based home theatre and would love to have a hand in getting it set up; we have a furnished spare bedroom!

I don't think you'll have any problem setting it up yourself ;)
