Ok I am building my Dad a computer to do some cad design. i was wondering If this would be a good setup for him. He will mainly be doing 2D cad design maybe 3D. Let me kinwo if I should change anything. If you can find the bulk of this cheaper anywhere let me know, I am trying to order from one place to save shipping.
Here is what i am going with: FROM NEWEGG.com

Motherboard Gigabyte GA-7ZMM Micro ATX Motherboard - $80
Processor AMD Duron 850MHz Socket A PGA Processor - $48
Heatsink/Fan Thermaltake MINI COPPER ORB Heatsink + Ball bearing Fan $15
Hard Drive Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 20GB 60 Ultra DMA 100 $77
NIC Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Model LNE100TX $17
Guillemot Hercules 3D Prophet Kyro 4000 XT 32MB SDRAM No TV Out $50
Memory-FROM CRUCIAL 2x 256 MB SDRAM - $90

Let Me know if i have left anything out, I will be adding my own case, I also will get a CD-Rom and Floppy, plus keyboard mouse, etc. Also if you see any conflicts let me knwo. It will most likely be runnign windows 2k or ME.

That looks good to me. I've built a system with the gigabyte board and a duron 650, and it has been extremely stable. That should work great for him. Nice thing is that in a few months/year when it gets a little slow for him, he can just pop in a tbird :)

If he does only 2D stuff...get a Matrox G400 or G450 card. Matrox=best 2D on the planet. However, they're a bit weak in the 3D department.

If you want a balance of 2D and 3D...ATI Radeon--get the LE version (and flash it to full) if you wanna save some $$.

uhhh...Orbs are baaaddd...they're hard as heck to install, performance is pretty bad...I would look into another HSF. If you dont overclock, a FOP 32-1, or a Taisol CGK742092 would come to mind first...

and...get...Arctic Silver :) cant live w/o it

Also...I would highly recommend Windows 2000. It's heaploads better than anything else MS has ever created, imo.

I do a lot of CAD. One important part you have left out is the monitor. What are you planning? I've got a FD Trinitron monitor. A good monitor is worth it for CAD work. My rig performs very nicely.

also get a volcano II instead of the orb volcano just as cheap or cheaper the mino orbs are just suck.

Are you putting a removable storage device on it?

Just saying this so you don't put a ATAPI/IDE 100MB Zip drive on your mobo. If the mobo has a VIA 686B southbridge on it, you're gonna have probs. I'm not sure about other VIA southbridge chips, but that's my experience anyway. They don't like each other.

edit: And get Win 2000. I can't wait to get it myself.
