My bro won a auction for the asus d1500T barebones desknote, which includes a sis m650/962 based motherboard, 15" xga tft, 4 in 1 flash reader, dvd/cdrw combo drive, ac adapter/ 12 cell external battery. He also got a 30gb hitachi travelstar for $75. And I gave him my 1.6A northwood, but he pays for roughly half of my new 2.4c cpu which I got for $130. And I plan on finding a good deal for 512mb pc2700 ram. So here are the prices we paid or plan to pay:

Asus D1500T barebones - $520

1.6A Northwood - $55

30gb Hitachi travelstar - $75

PCMCIA 802.11b card - Free after Rebate

512mb pc2700 ram ~ ?$40 after rebate?

Total will be under $750 including tax and shipping. Luckily this laptop has overclocking and I managed to easily set the cpu to 533mhz fsb getting 2.13ghz. In fact I went all the way up to 575mhz fsb getting 2.3ghz, with default voltage. I tested it extensive using prime 95 and other stress tests and its stable as a rock. He needs it to pass the time between classes up at college and he wants to take advantage of the wireless T1 in the library. The graphics suck IMO, but its good enough for lite gaming such as wc3, sc, q3a, ut, cs etc... And its more than enough for games like gunbound haha. Battery life is not much of a worry as he could use an outlet in the library. So is this a reasonably good price?

sorry to ruin your excitement but....you could probably get a dell (inspiron 1100, specifically) with signifcantly better equipment for around the same price (less if you choose base config)

but then again, equipment isnt everything. im not too sure about the quality of that laptop, but dell's isnt too great, thats for sure.

I took a look at the Inspiron 1100 for $750, it has a celeron 2.4, 14"xga, 20gb, etc... Taking a look at fatwa11et or the hot deals forum shows the best deal for $690. Other deals with centrino or p4 are $900 or above. If I do customize the inspiron 1100 with 512ram, p4 2.4ghz, 30gb hdd, wifi, and slap on a coupon or two, it exceeds $850.

I am not a fan of build-it-yourself laptops yet. I think they still need to mature a bit more, but for $750 it sounds like a decent deal.
