Someone at my school is selling this:
Compaq Armada 7800
PII 300 MHz
128 MB RAM
256 KB Cash
8 GB HD
14.1" TFT
DVD
3.5" FDD
33.6 K Modem + LAN
AC + Battery (Good condition)
Quick Restore CD's

I'm selling it for only <<< $830 >>>

I've been wanting a laptop, but I don't know what good prices are. Does this sound reasonable to anyone?

It seems a bit high to me for a used one. I would think you could get a much faster cpu for the price. But, I haven't kept up with 'em lately. You could check on egay for ballpark prices.

Nevermind I just now saw the CPU I thought it was a P3/800, I'd pay $700 for it, no more.

Congrats on your Golden status by the way.

Sounds like a good price.. BUT..
what's the Video RAM? Is it shared with main ram? how high does it go? if it's shared ram, and goes up to 8meg, i'd haggle him/her to increase RAM to 192... 120megs RAM and 8meg Video seems kinda low...

mine is 192, with 8 meg shared.. so 184RAM, 8Meg video... is decent... and i paid $900 for mine.. 6GBHDD Celeron 650 56K/LAN

seems a little high considering the cpu speed (you could probably get a 450 or 500 now at that price), but the dvd and the "256 KB Cash" ;) makes up for that I guess

yeah, the speed is low, but 300 isn't *slow*....but the screen and DVD make up for it. any questions i should ask the seller? this is what i have to ask him so far:
-any scratches on the screen? any dead pixels?
-any broken/dead buttons, switches that don't work, etc?
-what OS is installed, if any?
-what video card does it have?
-any of the mfg warranty left?

P2 300???

I would pass and wait a bit.
Sub 1000$ notebooks are the next big thing and you'll be able to find something with twice the performance for the same price in the near future.

hmmmm.....you really think sub $1000's will be big by say...the end of summer? i'm gonna need this for school work this fall. but people don't sell laptops locally too much. at least not on the newsgroups. i'm thinking of offering him 700 for it....

I just saw an Armada onsale from a place on the net for $899. It was a refurb, but it was packing a pIII 500. Same outfit.

I just checked that site again. It's a PIII 500 with 64megs of ram and a 6 gig drive. And it IS on backorder. So...sorry, I guess my memory isn't as photographic as I thought, but here's the link.

EDIT: 1 year warranty. Not too shabby.

A year ago, I sold my Gateway PII 300 MHz, 96 MB, 6 GB, Intel Lan Pro NIC, 13.3" TFT, 24X CD, Viking 56K modem, mini mouse, PCMCIA Compact Flash card reader, 8 MB CF card and a Belkin saddle bag case for $850 to a forum member. My laptop was in excellent condition.

I'd say $700 - TOPS for the computer that you listed. Also, I thought the Compaq has "shared memory" for the video board. The video performance may not be that good.

For school use, a 300 MHz laptop might be quite adequate if you are just going to use it for word processing and Internet usage. If you are going to be running Math programs, then you might consider something stronger.

That price is ridiculously high. You can get a PIII/800 for ~1000 (brand new)

I do not know. It seems a bit high.

My suggestion to you would be to use the "search" function using the keyword "laptop" on the FS/Trade Forum (and maybe include Hot Deals Forum, as well). You will get to compare lots of prices and get a very good idea what this laptop you are considering is worth.
