Is this a good monitor?

Yes, that is an excellent Shadow-Mask CRT (I can't stand aperture grills either... damn lines).

I'd have that exact same monitor myself, but don't have the deskspace for over 19", so I have the Viewsonic G90fb, which is the G220fb's little brother... great monitor.

That's a good price too... NewEgg has it for $420 (bye the way, if you're willing to step down in size a notch, the G90fb is half the cost at $200).

Here's what other folks think about the Viewsonic G220fb:

I have the little brother G90fb and it's decent for the money but it just doesn't compare to the realism, sharpness and color reproduction of an aperture grille model.

Nor does it compare to those incredibly annoying horizontal lines that go across the screen, distracting everyone but the blind with thoughts like "what the heck are those stupid lines doing on my screen?!?!"

I'm glad my monitor doesn't compare to an aperature grill... those monitors are incredibly annoying... they are so sharp and beautiful that those lines just really stand out and grab your attention!, screaming "here I am!".

Hm they are really only noticable with white screens. I'm betting you saw one for a few minutes and decided it sucked because of that. After a few days of using one you don't even notice they are there.

I can't see the lines on my (2) 21" FD Trinitrons. You'd have focus on them on a white background to really see them. It takes about a week to never notice them again.

Like see the screen door effect on a LCD. If you concentrate on whats on the screen istead of the screen itself, it doesn't matter.

it really is not near as bad as you guys think. maybe the first week on my ag, but now i never notice them. i guess if it really bothers you but its a small sacrafice in my mind for the quality you get from an aparture grill.

You know, there are a lot of nice 19" LCDs out there for sub-$400, and they are only 1" smaller than the 21" monitors you're looking at. I just grabbed a 19", 8ms response Hyundai L90D+ for $360, and it's pretty awesome. Good for gaming, too. Just a suggestion.

CRT's are far superior to LCD's for fast motion games. And for color accuracy. That isn't likely to change anytime soon. LCD's have lightweightness/small form factor feature on lockdown though.

No... I actually bought one once... yes, it looked great except those lines. But they were like a large wart on someone's face you can't stop looking at. I couldn't help it... they just kept saying "here we are... look at these lines". I took it back to the store the next day.

Is it even possible to make CRT's lighter and "slimmer"?

Yes... it's called Cathode Ray Panel technology, or "CRP" for short.

You should start seeing much slimmer CRTs soon, that are cheaper then LCDs, and don't have all the problems LCDs have (especially refresh rates, color depth and native resolution).

So in other words, CRT will probably kill LCDs out of the market...

So the question is... "does anybody even use LCDs anymore?".

I dunno about that. If that were true why is everyone discontinuing their crt models? Viewsonic just discontinued their top 19" crt monitor.

Someone here emailed samsung before about it and they said they didn't have any plans on making slim crt monitors for pc. :(
