Is this a good idea?

You can use it as an external, hot-pluggable HDD - USB 2 or Firewire. I have 5 of them - work just fine - but they cannot ever be like a "thumbdrive" because those are flash memory devices and have no moving mechnical parts.

I dont see why not? I mean, it won't be AS portable or easy as a small usb stick, and it will have moving parts instead of flash memory, but you'll have a lot more storage. If it's what you're looking for, go for it.

thanks...i know they arent like thumbdrives, but i guess i was just trying to illustrate the concept of removable, easily mobile storage

thanks again

I took an old 10 gig laptop hard drive and put it in a 19.99 compusa 2.5 inch enclosure. Works great. I use usb2.

Using Newegg.com for parts/pricing....

you can put together a 60gb 2.5" 5400rpm drive + USB enclosure (lots to choose from) for about $100 or less.

Transfer rates blow away USB solid state drives.....and 60GB!!! Heck, buslink has a new spiffy 8gb thumbdrive for a heafty $1400+...ouch!

I keep a 2gb flash/thumb drive in my backpack, and when I need to, grab my 60gb 5400rpm usb2.0 enclosed drive for big storage....like DVD's

😀
