ok, so I want to get a Goldfish and have it live in an alchohol bottle, I was thinking a Handle bottle of something that has clear glass, I was wondering if you thought it would work, or if it was cruel and not large enough.

P.S. yes I would be emptying the bottle first and washing it out well, before I put the goldfish in

It's a really bad idea. There isn't enough room for one fish to move a lot in a liquor bottle, either horizontally or vertically oriented, and as minendo points out, it will be difficult to keep clean. Forget it.

Big enough bottle and you could put a beta fish in there. They live in tight spots. Getting him in might be a problem.

Also, you could get some small goldfish that don't grow but an inch or two.

If you're doing this to make your place look cool or something like that, a nice aquarium with plants, a light and a backdrop would look much better. And be better for the fish.

The biggest problem I see is the small surface area of the water in the neck of the bottle won't allow enough oxygen to be disolved in the water without having a bubbler of some kind.

If your name is Fatal Bert then yeah it will kill the fish just fine.

If your name is Fatalbert then no the fish will die and it's a bad idea.

If you find a way around the dissolved o2 problem however, you could try it using ten cent "feeder comets" or bait shop fish without gouging your alcohol budget too badly.

I have found that, in general, any post that begins with "Is this a good idea" should be answered with "probably not."

hmmm, good question, I didn't think about that, that was why I asked first,

the size of the fish I didn't think would be a problem though, b/c Goldfish only grow to the maximum size that their environment supports

however, I'm getting the feeling that this won't work so well

yes, I'm talking about the very large bottles, not just 1 liter,

however, some good points were brought up, like cleaning and oxygen, that I hadn't thought about

Cleaning isn't a big deal, that would be accomplished easy enough with 1/2 water changes.

I've seen goldfish live in the same water, with only water being added when it gets low, for a very long time....

I think it would probably work, it would require more attention than a normal fish bowl would though.

As long as you don't fill the bottle all the way up, oxygen may or may not be a problem.

It would work if the fish was small enough. I had a friend who kept a fish in a small tank, eventually he forgot to feed it, but it ate the crap on the side of the tank. It survived many years without feeding it. It was a tiny fish..not sure what it was. About the size of a couple of thumbnails.

YES, it is a good idea.... Betas look better in bottles though. 1 liter is just fine for a beta.
My brother has a collection... every time he finishes off a bottle of Jack Daniels, he rinses it, and puts in a beta. Just don't fill the bottle past where it's widest.... the surface area is important for oxygen to get into the water.
