Is this a good deal?

I am going to buy a new motherboard, processor, fan, and case. This is the link to the motherboard+processor I'm looking at. $179.95 for 850mhz AMD and motherboard seems like a good deal to me. I already have a case with 250w power supply. Is this deal any good? If anybody else knows where I can pick up an AMD processor and motherboard for a better price, I would really appreciate it! I'm not too concerned about PC133 or ATA 100 since I'm going to use existing hardware and none is applicable for PC133 or ATA100.

Definately stay with a better brand of motherboard. Even go less on the cpu speed if neccessary. IMHO anything over 450MHz is overkill unless you're your own research facility or play the latest, most expensive games ALL of the time.

I bought the following combo from United Micro Inc for $175 + shipping.

MSI K7T Pro2A
AMD Duron 700Mhz
GLOBAL WIN HIGH DENSITY HEAT SINK & FAN

They might be even cheaper now, I bought it before Christmas. Look for them on Pricewatch.com, and by the way when you call them you have to mention the pricewatch price to get the break.

I don't mind spending more money, but I will always shop for a good deal. Speed has become a necessity for me due to DJing on my computer. Mixman is the program I use, but my 466mhz celeron with 256mb of ram just isn't fast enough to play numerous wav files at the same time. I don't know much about the motherboard either but I am about to place my order if I can't find something else. Here's the link to Shuttle Motherboard's website. Appears to be a decent motherboard if my opinion. If I'm wrong, I guess I'm SOL! Thanks for all the input.

I would reccomend going with a set-up along the lines of what JustX suggested. ALWAYS stay with name-brand MOBO. Cost cutting will bite you in the end.

Watch out!

This is an old Athlon Classic (Slot A) chip, with the original AMD-750 mobo. I wouldnt recommend buying one of these, as it will seriously limit your upgrade path in the future. (ie. they don't make Slot A chips anymore)

I own one, and now have no way to upgrade without buying a mobo and chip. Buy a cheaper (MSI or Gigabyte) Socket A mobo and a Thunderbird or Duron chip. You'll be glad you did, and it won't be much more (if any) expensive!

Yup stay away from the slot a. Slot A Athlons are about as fast as a Duron. And you won't have a future upgrade path.

Yep, just as the last 2 posts say, avoid this Slot A system. Besides, your 250w supply probably wouldn't cut it with the Slot A, as most required 300w minimum.

Here is a good alternative.
Duron 700Mhz for $53, that should easily run at 900Mhz+
Duron 700 $53
and then add the Abit KT7 motherboard for $129
Abit KT7 $129

Price for quality, current products, $182.00

Looks like everyone seems to be running the same Slot A combo for around $180. This was the 5th one I've seen from different suppliers in the past week. None of them are worth the money or potential problems you may have by going with the discontinued Slot A.

This is a MUCH better deal. These prices are actually pretty good, although they gouge a bit for the shipping.

Key thing is they have a good rating on ResellerRatings.com, and that you will have an upgradeable system for the future.

Enjoy!

Hmmm......I dont think I would go for that, you can get a duron for under $50 and the new sis integrated socket A motherboard is only about $90. So for $140 its cheaper and probably performs better. =)
