Is this a good deal?

Depends how honest the someone is 😉

Seriously.

I likely would not buy a used anything from anyone but friends.

Refurbs aren't bad though...as long as newegg's return policy is good (i don't live in teh US), that'd be fine too.

Another question: Do you think a refurb from Newegg is better than buying a used card from someone?
Generally.. Newegg still has 30 day replacement policy with most refurbs... Plus, even though the refurb specifies ' bare card only ', you will usually get the full retail package..

This card is a decent overclocker too. Especially if you upgrade the cooling system, you can be flying past XT speeds.

Ah, you stole question 3 right from my brain!!!!

Newegg does have a warranty on their refurbs in case you get a bum card, but you may/may not get a retail box. It's been 50/50 for me; some video cards came completely bare, some came with the retail box, some came with no box but half the cables, etc.

Ideally I'd love to have box, cables, software etc, but it's not really mandatory (pleae tell me if I'm wrong). I plan on downloading the latest drivers anyway, and not planning on using any of the outputs except for the standard one for now anyway.

Just a quick update to anyone who posted (I appreciated the help by the way): Ordered it up a few weeks ago, it came with all the cables etc, manual had some handwritten notes in it (and what looked to be a food stain also (wtf?)). Popped it in, was a little surprised I had to give it it's own power supply but no big deal, am very happy with the performance. Bought the Battlefield 1942 triple pack (1942,Road to Rome, Secret Weapons) , runs great. Installed Battlefield 2 Demo, runs great. I'm not maxing out the graphics, don't really care about doing that, and am very happy. America's Army runs great, much better than before on higher settings. Nascar 2003 season runs great, big frame rates there.

All in all, happy I made the change.
