I need a new comp for my brother but my dad is a cheapass and doesn't like spending any money on computers at all. So I figured, for $500 including tax and shipping, I can get this:

Processor Type/Speed: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - 1.8GHz
Memory: 128MB Included / 2GB Max.
Hard Drive: 40GB
Form Factor: Tower (3x5)
Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Ethernet/Modem: Ethernet-Integrated (No Modem)
Media Device: CD-ROM
Graphics chipset: Intel Extreme Graphics
Limited Warranty period: One year parts and labor IBM On-Site Repair

That's $399 + shipping + tax, the only thing i'd put in it would be 512 MB more RAM (Which is about 50 bucks at Crucial.com) and then his 12x CDRW that he currently has in his now-defunct P233 MMX running Win98 :Q

He just does a lot of AIM chatting and school work. Does anyone see anythign wrong with this or a better deal for $500 including tax and shipping without the hassle of MIRs?

Why don't you just build a comp for him? I think that would be the more reasonable and more cost affective way of going.

I took it as he was building that for him, heh.

Yeah, sounds like a good deal.

Edit: Oh, nm.. the Warranty gives it away.

Yeah just build him one.

IBM is teh suck anyways. I HATE the looks of IBM computers. I hate IBM even worse than Apple.

Because I don't live at home and I don't want to be responsible and have my dad or brother saying "well this downloaded game off Kazaa doesn't work, it must because you built the system and there are incompatibilities!"

Plus, then I would have to have my dad take care of each and every component I buy? That'd be a nightmare. The one-yaer onsite warrenty makes sure that I am responsible for basically nothing. And if it's not going to fail within a year, with the exception of a hard drive, its going to last 4 or 5 years.

This is brand new straight from the manufactuter, BTW.

Argh, appearantly none have you have dealt with building a computer for a family member that lives several hours away. Every time something miniscule goes wrong they blame you for not buying OEM.

Besides, once you factor in a case and power supply, a motherboard, a CPU, RAM, keyboard/mouse (his ones now SUCK) and anything that isn't integrated plus tax and shipping, it really wouldn't be any cheaper at all. And it would save me a few hours at least, not counting the OS install which I would have to come up with. And the 1yr onsite takes the burden off me, I have enough stuff to deal with. And if I have to come bacK ONCE next year unexpectedly, factoring in costs it ends up being almost $80 in vehicular wear and tear (that I would not get reimbursed for) and an entire weekened.

Good system for the money plus it comes with a warranty. I think it is a great idea to build computers for myself but avoid doing it for other people. I do not want to do free tech support.

That's a lesson I learned years ago. Before I moved away for college, I built about 6 computers for people knowing that they wouldn't be able to find me once the semester started... Muhahahaha!!!!!
