Ok, so my friend just graduated from college and he has no job but he's looking for a car. He's really considering this 1993 Ford Probe that has 100K+ on it, he can get it for around $3600 , but i don't know if it's such a good idea considering it has so many miles and he expects to keep it for 2 to 3 years. WHat do u guys think, should he get it? He had it checked out by a mechanic and there are approx. $900 in repairs that need to be done.

It should be ok if it's been properly maintained. The engine is made by Mazda (which can be both a good thing and a bad thing) and should be reliable even after 100k miles. According to Kelly's Blue Book (which tends to inflate prices), the car is priced about $300 too high in it's condition. Of course you'll want to haggle down to a lower figure. I think $2900-$3100 would be a fair price.

Ford Probe is identical to Mazda MX-6, and to me the MX-6 looks a bit better.

However, MX-6 parts are very expensive, and since the car is quite old, I don't really recommended getting it. My friend bought a 94 MX6 at 6000 and spend 3000 fixing it. dont get me wrong, its quite a nice car.

but if the mechanic said 900 is all he need to pay and he's only keeping it for 2-3 yrs, I guess its a safe bet.

for $3600, MX6 are one of the cheapest, sporty car you can get with in this price range.. Older Integras and Nissan 240sx are nice choices too.
