Is this a decent dsl speed choice?

Verizon Online DSL Personal
Downstream is 266kbs - 640kbs. Upstream is 90kbs - 90kbs.

Presently, i have a cable modem from adelphia and it's really been slow and unresponsive these past few days. I called them up a few times to find out why and it's always the same answer, "we're fixing something, please be patient". Everyday?!?!? Whatever. I'm not familiar with dsl however, with the specs i provided, will that be comparable to your everyday $39.00 per month cable modem? I just want something more consistent and reliable. I'm paying the same price right now for the cable. Thanks.

That's an ok downstream speed for the price. The question is, will you be closer to 266 than 640? With Verizon, I'd say probably closer to 266.

You should check out www.dslreports.com for good info on DSL providers. They have user ratings and everything. Verizon gets a lot of black eyes there.

I'm pleased with it, but all systems have their technical problems from time to time, so I'd stick with the cable for awhile and give them a chance to fix it - may be putting more lines into your area. Also, better check to see if you're close enough to the telco switching station for DSL to work.

Yeah that's ok for the price I guess. Would like to see a little higher upstream but oh well. Is that the only option in that price range? Chances are it will be closer to 266.

I personally would suggest Speakeasy.net, just read their ratings on DSLReports for proof. I've been with them for a year now and they're just excellent.

Yah, my phone line is supported, the verizon place isn't far from me. I have cable service now but it's always "under repair" and it's really slow these past days and i'm pissed. The road runner i had before i moved was way better. I'm going to give the dsl a try and hopefully will like it better. I'll check out speakeasy.net, thanks for the suggestion.
