I have been looking for a HD TV for a while, about 42 inches, mostly for Movies, and primetime TV, also keep in mind the TV won't have HD channels, well minus the over the air broadcasts. (The 1 cable company in the area charges an arm and leg for it) General seating is about 8ft. I've been looking for a few months now, with a budget of about $500, as everything I've read is HDTV prices will drop, so far the only drops I've seen is on "off-brands" and TV with a 60hz refresh rate. I came across a 42-inch E421VA LCD HDTV Vizio 120hz a week ago, but the price was $550. However, Dell is having a CyberMonday deal for $497.99 with free shipping, is this a worthy buy? (Forgive the loaded question)

Honestly, a TV should be LARGE to provide the best movie-going experience possible. Of course, you have to do with what you have so at that price range, your choices are limited. However, for $100 more ($597.99), you can get 5" more. Vizio is a mediocre brand but after a certain point, it is all about intangible reasons as to why so many people spend gobs of money on such products. So, if you want to have fun watching movies, I would suggest going for the 47" Vizio.

The 42" Vizio is a great deal for a mid-level TV (120Hz/1080p etc.). If you want to absolutely not cross over $500, then grab it ASAP IMO.

For 42" at 8' (or even 50" for that matter) 1080p won't be noticeable. I've seen Fry's stores with 720p Samsung plasma for $387 in the 42" variety, so if you can hold out until around Super Bowl time you can probably get a 50" 720p Plasma for around $500.

I sit about 8' from my 42" Vizio Plasma (circa 2007) and wish it was bigger, but at the time the extra 8" to get to 50" was about $500 more. It still has a great picture and I've had no problems with it. It is actually an LG Plasma panel.

Samsung now makes Insignia TV's (Best Buy brand) so you may want to look at those, too. They had a 720p 50" Plasma over the weekend for $549. (Actually it was cheaper before Black Friday and went up to $599 over the weekend)

If you're stuck on LCD, you missed the 47" Vizio 120Hz today at Amazon for $600 shipped / no tax (for most).
