Heres the story, shutdown my pc at night as normal, next day pressed power button to start pc and "nothing". no fans, no hard drive, no display,no beeps. The only thing working is the LED on the motherboard,so some power is there. My first thought was the front panel switch was bad but I have tested this and its ok. Now the question is what the hell has gone wrong.I suspect the power supply is not switching on when the button is pressed I cant think what else could have gone wrong in this way. has anyone had similar problems to this or have any ideas?

Abit SE6e (all items 3 months old, home built machine)
Enlight case and 250W power supply
celeron 566MHz( not overclocked )
128 Meg Dimm
voodoo 3 3000 graphics card
sound blaster live sound card
network card

If you have a spare ATX power supply you could try that. Also try to disconnect every peace of hardware like cd-roms, hd, floppy drive and try it again. Leave the power connector on the motherboard though.

Thanks for the swift reply, I dont have a spare power supply though I do have one in my other computers. I dont want to take these out as I could end up with even more problems. when you sugest removing various items , if one of them was bad then I should still get some sign of life shouldn't I, even a bad post or something.

Had a similar problem with an Asus P3B-F. It was the RAM. Try completely different ram, and just because they work in one machine doesn't mean they'll work in another (this is what srewed me up for two weeks!).

But would bad ram cause the pc to die in this way, surely you would still get to post and then get error beeps for the bad memory or did your pc show the same symtoms as mine.

Yes. I got nothing, no beeps, just the green light on the motherboard. I know, it sounds crazy...I couldn't believe it at the time. When you do try new DIMMS, be sure to give your motherboard some time to boot up.

First take the memory out and turn it on! When I do that the fan on the power supply turns on and the cd light goes on!

Probably the motherboard. Somehow it isn't turning on the power supply when the button is pressed. I hate this ATX junk...I want a nice fat power switch like the AT standard.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, at least I have a few things to try now.I think I will try the power supply test first and go from there. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again,PAUL

Right I have just done the power supply test by shorting out pins 14 and 17 on the power connector, and no fan, so I think this confirms the power supply.I think I will go for a new power supply, Thanks again for the feedback.
