One of you gun people ought to be able to confirm this.
Why do they call it a Bushmaster and a Remington on the same page?

Bushmaster is the manufacturer of the gun
The cartridge was developed by Remington

Bushmaster makes many .223 weapons. The AR-15 copies are but only one of them. Somehow I doubt that a short barrel AR-15 copy (what is in that link) was the gun used.

BTW, the Bushmaster website is unresponsive. It must be getting slammed.

Bushmaster manufactures the rifle, the cartridge the rifle is chambered to fire is named ".223 Remington".

The link is to one with a 16" barrel and
The M16 A2 sight system on this carbine offers full sight radius for optimum accuracy, and adjustment for both windage and elevation. The elevation knob is graduated from 300 to 800 meters and automatically compensates for bullet drop. Two flip-up apertures are designed for either short range shots at moving targets or long distance accuracy.
You think there is a "better" model for a "sniper" to use?

Dozens of companies make AR-15 rifles... Bushmaster is just one of them...

A good AR-15 rifle in standard A2 configuration usually runs you about $700 new. Used they can be had for about $500. They are generally accurate out of the box to 100 yards, and with a few hours of work at a range sighting in the scope, you can get the accuracy up to 300 yards.

There have been tens of millions of these rifles produced for the civilian market, they are a dime a dozen and nothing special.

The .223 is a better gopher gun than anything else. At close range though it obviously works. The NATO version of the .308 is vastly superior to the 223 and this is what true "snipers" use.

Agreed.
But, what makes it special in this case is CNN reporting that a Bushmaster .223 was recoverd from the suspect's car.

It's not that hard to get.
Plus, there are tons of preban M16 floating around. I know a dude that has 3 of them.
Also, with a LEO or Military ID you can still purchase full auto configurations.

You think he stole it from his time of service?

No. When a rifle goes missing from the armory, the base goes into lockdown. Any place I was stationed was like that. They take missing rifles very seriously.

True BF, but wasnt he in the Gulf War? Things missing in combat often wind up in the States by mysterious means.

Not all bushmaster rifles are LEO only. I own one, 20" heavy barrel with fixed carry handle. Cost me about $800 and change after tax, two thirty round clips, and two boxes of ammo.

I *think* you can buy ar15's with factory flash hiders legally. I believe bushmaster sells one with a 16" barrel and standard stock. There are three points that define a LEO only ar15, collapsable stock, flash hider, and bayonett lug, and I believe they have to have all three.

Stealing a service rifle from his time in the army is VERY unlikely. They watch over them like hawks, and even then, they use an m16 variant, not an ar15, and they're most certainly not built by Bushmaster.

Right, I was just pointing out that the ones in his link were banned. Not really the one they have recovered either. Bushmaster is often given the credit for any AR15 for some reason. Same way with Colt and the 1911. Doesn't matter if you have a Fulton AR, some folks will still call it a Bushmaster, same as a Kimber 1911, still called a Colt.

Yeah you can still buy prebans, you can even buy the flashhider and add it if you want to break the law.

Yes, a HBAR (heavy[long] barrel M16) would be far better for "snipping." The shorter the barrel, the less accurate the gun.

And as others have pointed out, THIS Bushmaster model is LEO. Meaning it cannot be sold to the general public.

Bushmaster makes a LOT of guns, most of them hunting guns. I highly doubt they used an M16/AR-15 copy.

WOOHOO! I hope that's the same guy that was shooting. I'd hate for this gun finding to be a far-off coincidence.

Yep, the sole supplier for the military M16 is Colt.

I just realized. I believe I've shot those rifles before. A good friend of my family was a gunsmith and had a huge selection. He let me shoot a few of his rifles and an Uzi. That was one of the more powerful rifles I shot.....

That's not really correct. My cousin's M16 issue in the Marine Reserve is a Harrington & Richardson Arms.

Really? They musta changed something since I was in.
