is this 6800u worth it?

is the eVGA or the ASUS model better? btw: i don't want to worry about OCing anything, unless i had a great tutorial on how to

my dog can overclock my graphics card.
1. uninstall old graphics drivers (add/remove programs), turn off computer, put in new graphcs card, download and install drivers from www.nvidia.com.
2. install, reboot
3. download coolbits
4. install coolbits
5. right click on your desktop, go to displays, click your display.
6. on the left find a tab that says "clock frequency settings".
7. click "manual overclocking", scroll down and accept.
8. go to "Performance" (3D), and ajust your core clock up 15MHz. click test changes, and click apply.
9. get into a game and play it for 5 mins, if you don't have any problems or see any weird colors/white specs then you are OK.
10. go back, up your core clock 15 more MHz. wash, rinse, repeat 😉
11. if you start to notice any abnormalities in the game, back off 5MHz and start with the memory. you can do this in whatever incroments work for you, most cards can get 1100 farily easily and to 400MHz core without a problem.

You can also keep an eye on your temperatures buy clicking the "temperature settings" tab on the left.
Good luck, and no don't even think twice about buying that Ultra unless you are rich.......nevermind, do yourself and an Iraqui child a favor and buy a GT and send $100 to the Red Cross.

If the above gives you artifacts but the temprature isn't too high...
just flash a 6800GT with a Ultra BIOS. That should help resolve some of the issue as the 6800Ultra has slightly higher core voltage..

this guy is new to OCing, he shouldnt be flashing BIOS'es already..even though I did 😉

I have an Ultra which I bought only because they were out of GTs on the Microcenter sales.

By now I am glad I have spent the $100 extra.

The speed increase is small, but at least as far as reference design boards are concerned, you have the better cooling, a more stable slot mounting and an overall better PCB design with dual power connectors. If you read this thread you also see what kind of hacks the Ultra supports if you are willing to fiddle with it.

Plus even the Ultra with my 2.4 GHz AMD64 cannot really do full power Doom3, you still have to experiment to find good settings. Even the Ultra is no "just turn on everything" card. So any piece of extra speed is welcome.

I believe that for now the benefit of the Ultra is small but I tend to keep cards for a long time. In the future the better power connection and the BIOS hacks as mentioned in the thread I link to will help me keeping the card in business. Plus 10% more speed can make the difference between playable or not for Doom5 or whatever.
