IS this 55" LCD any good? ($999.99 Toshiba)

$49. shipping to my zip, may be tax in your state.
Sears had this TV on sale for $899.99 + tax before BF. Thread over at SD.
Google for reviews.

Man... wish I had seen that sale at Sears. I've been hunting for a 50"+ screen to replace our 40" but I want to keep it under a grand.

Same boat. Have a 42". Want a 60", 60" to expensive but 55" will do at under $1K.

From reading, it sounds like the 55HT1U for $1K is better than anything that was made several years ago. So,I am expecting to get a picture quality upgrade in addition to a size upgrade. Pending spousal permission.

If you really want cheap. Element 55" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV $699.00 + tax, free shipping, from Walmart.

If you have a Discovercard link to Walmart through ShopDiscover and get 5% off.

Gets mixed reviews at Walmart. If you don't like it just haul it to your nearest Walmart for a refund.

It's rumored Funai makes Element, Emerson, Polaroid, RCA, Philips, Sylvania, and other brand TVs in, where else, China.

Last I knew, there were only a small handful of plants on the planet that make LCDs. The difference is hardware driving the screens and features/software/audio. Inputs are different, etc. But the actual screen quality is probably comparable across many brands.

Anyway, I went and took a look at TVs today. I did not buy anything. The Toshiba was not in stock even though Best Buys web site says all stores stock it and have them in stock. BS!

Oh ... the anyway. I am holding out for a 60" for under $1000 that is of reasonable quality. Screen area when going from 42" (current) to 60" doubles almost exactly. A 55% gives something like a 70% increase in area.

EDIT: Looks like there are $1000 LG Plasmas out there (1080p) that are 60". I want a better brand name though.

There's a few 50"+ plasmas I would have already pulled the trigger on, except I hear reflections are a problem and our room has a large window we have to deal with. So I think I'm stuck with LCD.

I don't necessarily want "cheap". I want average. Decent size, decent picture, decent price. All that said... even if it fit all the above, I would never buy a TV from Wal-Mart. I hate that store with a passion! 🙂

I have a 50" LG plasma and yes the glossy screen is a problem if it's in a room with a window opposite it. Mine is in the family room with a small window behind the TV so reflection is not a problem. I also have a new 32" LG LCD TV with an IPS panel. If I were to buy another larger TV it would be a plasma. Burn in is not a problem with the newer plasmas.

Here's some good comparisons between plasma and LCD TVs.

Good links, thanks. The question is whether the brightness of my room is actually going to matter for a plasma. We have a bay window with 5 separate windows... we're looking for shades/blinds so we can block only some of the windows without having to turn the whole room into a cave...

I have that element TV and I will say for what I paid I'm extremely pleased. I can really only think of one thing that i don't like and its Hz. It's not true 120hz, it does this automotion 120hz. This actually looks alright most of the time, but occasionally will judder. Everything else I love about this TV.

I took a look at TVs. Even though the Best Buy web site says thy stock the TV this thread is about, they do not. Liars...

Anyways, I decided that if I ever do upgrade it will be to a 60", not 55". So, I will be keeping an eye out for a $1000 60". Maybe I'd do $1200 but that is it. It also has to fall itn oteh category of good price, good picture, good sound. Sound is my real motivator as I rarely use the stereo with my TV and don't want to.
