Is this 10.000 rmp 300gb sas drive a deal?

Hi,

I have won a brand new P6T deluxe mainboard and would like to use the sas connectors from the board as the system disks in raid (because i need the sata for my video edits in backup).

These harddisks are new, 3 year warranty and do cost only 120 usd (in belgium 100 ?):http://www.vobicom.be/CAH_Prod...ilsL2.ASP?ref=11649424

My humble question: is this a deal?

With an 8MB cache and only 10000rpm spindle speed, this is a decent deal. If you don't need the capacity (you said they would be system disks), you could get 2x 15000rpm disks for nearly the same price and get better performance.

Thanks for the tip,

However, here in Belgium the 15rpm disks are more towards the 200 usd budget and that's a bit too much 🙂
So, would you go with these or prefer a 7200 rpm barracuda es2 which seems to be nice too for a regular pc in raid?

I think a couple of 500GB ES.2 drives would be nice both performance wise and temperature wise. The ES.2 drives should hit 100 MB/sec+ individually and since they're 2 platter drives, they should run very cool as well. I imagine the performance difference due to spindle speed would be made up by the facts the ES.2 drives have a 32MB cache and higher density platters (assuming 2x150GB platters for the HP drive and 2x250GB platters for the ES.2). If you're on a budget and don't need the capacity, the 250GB ES.2 model would be a nice alternative for less than 100 usd each.
