Is Thermalright SLK-900 a good heat sink for OCing P4?

It's definitely good for cooling, but i don't think it's "good" for your hearing or your sanity

I don't really care about noise. I just want to overclock P4 2.6 800FSB to about 3.5. So if that combo is enough to cool down the CPU?

it might cool down the CPU, but the 3.5 is probably asking for a bit much out of the CPU.

what is the max amount of speed can i produce on this HSF with a P4 2.8 or 2.6 800FSB?
Can i use this HSF on a AMD barton CPUs
Which CPU can have better speed if i overclock on P4 to 3.5Ghz and on barton to 2.6Ghz?

I had that same heatsink and fan on my 1700+. It sounded like it was going to take off. Today I put a 92x25mm 2800 rpm @ 36 dB and its only running a few degrees hotter.

i'm thinking around 3.4-3.6GHz if you're lucky.....
yes you can use it on AMD cpu's, but you'll need a mobo with 4 mounting holes to put the heatsink

I got one for my P41.6Aghz and it works like a breeze. Though the Zalman I heard were better and quieter from others and I think I'm going to get one and try it out. Oh and I also got the Tornado fan before. Trust me, it's louder than you think, way louder. I'm not really exaggerating when I say this but if you want to get used to it, just run a hair dryer 24/7... it really is that loud.

If you want those ranges, you NEED a decent water cooling setup. Really. You are asking ALOT from air to do that. You would need a low ambient temp, probibly 100+CFM going INTO the case, 80+cfm on the hsf, 20+cfm from a side mounted fan over the hsf, 50+cfm out the back, and 40+ cfm out the top. Add it all up and you are really looking at ~75-77Db, at a very high Khz. Not a deep bass sound, think like someone said abit louder than a blow dryer. Get water cooling.

That's what I thought also. I figured that some of the peoples complaints were because they wanted their computer to be completely silent. Which I don't mind hearing the fans cooling my case, but I bought an slk900 and 92mm tornado and was totally shocked. It literally sounds like a small vacuum cleaner running in your pc case. I could hear it with my in other rooms in my house with the office door shut! It is difficult to speak on the phone at my computer desk! It really is a joke. Turned down to 5v so that the noise level was tolerable, the slk900 was several degrees warmer than the near silent all copper Zalman which is again my choice of HSF for my 2.4b at 3.02ghz. So, to me, the Thermalright coolers are no longer a consideration.
