Is thermal compound a absolute must instead of the thermal tape stuff on the bottom of volcano IIs?

I've been told by a number of people that the tape ins't enough and that my chip will burn out. I won't be overclocking it or anything though. Are these folks justified with their advice or just blowing smoke up my case? 🙂
 
it is always best to try and remove as much heat as possible from the chip wheter you are oc'ing or not

I had a VII and used the tape. I think that if you don't o/c the tape should be okay if you have a 1.4 or below proc. However, I did want to o/c my 1g and was not able to get above 1.33 with the tape. I finally gave in and bought AS II. When I installed it I noticed that the tape had already worn thin due to heat after only a few weeks of use. I was getting 53-54 C idle with the VII. WIth the AS II and a new CAK38 I was able to o/c to 1.46 with a 43C idle. So imo, AS II is key if you wanna o/c but not that key if you don't wanna o/c

I have a Volcano II on a 1.33 TBird.
Arctic Silver II dropped the temp maybe 2-3 degrees lower than the tape.
 
I would like to try this Artic SIler stuff but how do I center the drop of the silver stuff? Do I actually put in on the chip, that way knowing that it gets covered in the right area?
 
Well I took your advice and just ordered some ASII 🙂
Now I just have one question. I have another brand new Volcano II that I got as a replacement for a noisy one that's in my computer right now. Should I peel the thermal tape off before using the ASII or should I use them both together? Actually I have a second question. If I peel the tape off, should I sand down the heatsink's bottom?

Definitely take the thermal tape off before putting on the Artic Silver II. You can use either one but not both. Definitely use the Artic Silver if you want to overclock, otherwise the tape is fine. If you want to sand the bottom of the head sink to make it nice and smooth you can. I think alot of the guys on here do that, but I never have.

You should definitely not use the tape and the ASII together. Remove the tape using the technique described on the ASII instructions page.

In terms of sanding your HSF, you should be very careful if you choose to do this. If you do it unevenly, then it will probably lose effectiveness.
