I have a Samsung 50" 1080p DLP and upgraded from a cheap Sony 480i player over component to a Samsung upconverting 1080p over HDMI.

There was only a slight improvement, the Samsung did a great job of upconverting the 480i (not even progressive) from the Sony.

1080p blu-ray discs played on my PS3 do look better though, Casino Royale and Black Hawk Down were excellent.

Since blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1 so far this year a PS3 might be a better investment than the Toshiba :)

(Either way get a Netflix sub since they carry every US blu and HD release.)

Let me say that the Toshiba is about the best Upconverting HD Player out there. This comes with seeing it on a 1080P projector solution (sony pearl). However if it was my money I would go with the PS3. At least you are getting a gaming unit for the price of the upconversion.

However the Toshiba will still look better upconverting DVDs. Slightly better at 116 inches than the Oppo 981 which is one of the best Upconverting DVD players out there.
