Is there such thing as a whole-house UPS system?

I think it'd be awesome to have the entire house on battery power, plus surge protection, so that all sockets give you full power, even for a little bit after the power goes out. Is that possible?

Check out generators. However, you need to turn one on after the power goes. Not sure about a whole house UPS type deal though.

They have battery backups/generators for huge buildings full of people, a house is nothing.

Generators is not UPS.

You get a UPS system like the ones they use in datacenters. Generators should kick in within 1 - 2 min so your UPS then can be turned off. Diesel/gas generators can run for like 3 - 4 days.

It is if you have a generator that is capable of producing the kilowatts needed to maintain your appliances, Gas or battery charged i think there are a few out there that could handle that load fairly well, though your compensation will be the noise that the generators provide.

 

At my office, there's a natural gas-powered generator that provides power for the entire building when the lights go out.

During the 2003 blackout, the building was used for an emergency operations center for the entire campus. It was very cool.

Many Whole-house Solar Systems use backup batteries and even add generators for when the sun isn't 'out' . . .
(generators can run continuously for years)
