i was wondering if the ad is a misprint cause AFAIK, AMD started the k6-3 @ 400mhz...anyone that knows for sure please confirm for me...TIA

Looks like a mis-print. I know they made a K6-2 333 though, but I thought 350 was the slowest K6-3 that was in production at the time.

I thought the lowest K6-3 was 450. There was a rumor of a K6-3 400, but I dont think it was ever released.

There is no K6-3 333

The 333's were only made for Packard Bell? or some company like that. I know they weren't sold retail or oem.

The K6-3 333's the you see in the ad do exist - they were a special speed grade made specifically for Fry's I believe. Essentially, they're K6-3 350's that didn't quite make the cut. Most will do 350 with a slight voltage nudge. K6-3's were officially mass produced in 350, 400 and 450MHz increments. There are newer K6-3+ chips floating around (not supposed to be sold retail, intended for laptops), but they're not what was being discussed. :)

Yea, Jonnyjack,

That AMD K6-3 333mhz is for real. I got one from Fry's with an FIC mobo for $79 to build a system for my classroom. It's stamped AMD K6-3 333mhz. If you do a search on fleabay you can always find these for sale (&picture).

Anyway, the system is faster, and is more stable than my home Pentium III 350 system. Don't know about the Soyo mobo.

Fry's, what a place. I love/hate that place.

i know what you mean...fry's always has great deals...all the stores are huge and you can find basically any electronic item there...but they have the absolute worst customer service...

I am VERY sure that AMD never released a K6-3/333. There was of course a K6-2/333 and I bet either the CPU Frys is selling is that or a K6/3-433. I did find this below doing a search on pricewatch. Seems there must have been a K6/3-350.

<< AMD K6-III/350 with 3DNow! 100mhz BUS Authorized AMD Reseller . $ 79 8.00 8/25/00 10:03:19 AM CT PC Progress >>

There also seems to be a K6/3-433. Maybe they put in a 3 in place of the 4. See Below.

<< AMD IN STOCK, K6-III/433 with 3DNow! - OEM INCLUDES - 30day Dealer warranty $ 80 $6 & up via UPS GRD 10/30/00 12:18:00 PM CT SOFTWAREANDSTUFF.COM >>

The answer is YES there is a K6-III/333, I have two of them, they are marked:

AMD-K6-III/333AFR
2.2V CORE/ 3.3V I/O
B 9912MPM
1998 AMD

The second one is running in my pc at 400MHz so I'm not going to take off the hsf just to get the markings, but I know its partially:

AMD-K6-III/333AFK
2.2V CORE/ 3.3V I/O

I think they are basically 350MHz models that were probably sold just to OEM's for their 95MHz buss speed mb's. (3.5 multiplier x 95MHz = 333MHz)
I purchased both of them at Frys in Portland, OR several months ago.
One was included in a combo deal w/a FIC PA2013 mb/cpu for $79.-
I bought the other cpu only for $29.-......!

hard to believe but I sold a bunch of those guys. I'm sure it's made for notebook or other country, only needs 2.2v, runs off a ss7 socket... not listed anywhere on AMD's website but a cheap upgrade. Overclocks to 375 w standard fan. There is a lot of these going around on e8ay

i bought it today...it's marked:

AMD-K6-III/333AFK
2.2V CORE/ 3.3V I/O
B 9924FPCW
1998 AMD
---------------
at the sales register the lady was new or something...she messed up by charging me twice for a keyboard, luckily i caught it before i left the counter...she didn't know how to credit me back so her manager had to do it for her...i spent 20 min at the register alone...wouldn't have been a fry's customer service experience otherwise :)

AMD started the K6-3 at 350Mhz, 333Mhz sounds like it would be a 66Mhz FSB and there were no K6-3s on 66Mhz FSB, only 100Mhz.

I don't know about a special 333Mhz K6-3 deal for certain OEMs..but there was no offical release of a 333Mhz.

OK, you guys have me interested. One of the kids PC's has a Shuttle HOT 569 mobo. It has 66, 75, 83 bus speeds and up to 5.5 multiplier. It has a voltage option for 2.1 Vcore, 3.3 Vio. Could I use one of these? I wont run an 83 bus (dont like it), but will do a 75. How fast could I go? Could I do 5.5 x 75 on any of these? The PC now has an MMX 233 @ 262. I assume there would be a nice increase?

edit: Nevermind. The version I have doesn't support 2.1 Vcore

Noriaki,
You don't like my math huh, there were more than a few OEM mb's w/95MHz buss default speeds.
In fact I have a second Compaq pc w/95MHz and 100MHz buss speed settings.

oldfart,
The voltage setting is 2.2v, but can be run somewhat higher, especially when over-clocking, you can get by w/modest voltage increase.
What's the lowest voltage your Shuttle HOT will support?

Also, you can set the multiplier to the "2" setting and the cpu will automatically see it as 6x!
I would not be surprised at all if you could get 5.5 x 75MHz, in fact w/extra cooling I would expect 5, 5.5 or possibly 6 x multiplier.

You can check the Forums at www.amdzome.com/ then go to BBC, K-6X and you can check w/the guys there if your mb is on the list.
They are mostly oc'ing K6-III+ cpu's but generally if the boards will accept the K6III they will also work w/the K6III+.
Go for it if you can, there is a major difference from the K6-II to the 256MB on die cache of the K6III, you can't loose for $29.!

clumsum, its a little confusing. There are 2 versions the HOT 569. 1.x and 2.x. The site states that only rev 2.x boards have support for 2.2Vcore. However, the mobo has bios options as well as jumper options for Vcore. The bios options go from 1.8 - 3.5, the jumper options dont. I'll check that web site.

oldfart,
These socket7 upgrades can be confusing, as much of the information comes from trial and error, plus there is a large amount of mis-information out there in cyber space.
I think the K6x line of processors are fun to tweak, especially the + variety, they are very durable and not so prone to breakage as the new Durons/Athlons, although they are fun too.

I have an older Compaq that came with a 400Mhz K6-2, it now is my back-up pc and presently sports a K6-II+ 500MHz cpu running stable at 600MHz!
The plus (+) chips are better over-clockers, but also more $$$.

bonkers325,
Care to elaborate on your comment?

I have several K6III-350's. These were in fact made for the laptop market. Mine are marked 2.2-2.4v (if I remember correctly). I run one on an old FIC-2012 @ 2.1, 5.5x 75mhz FSB. These are the highest settings the mobo has.
