if I count all the fans on my comp including cpu and chipset fans as well as case fans. I have 12 but they are all ball bearing and dont make that much noise.
the cpu fan is a Thermaltack spark 7+ , ~1300rpm to ~6000 which is hooked to a controller it seems to be the noisiest if i turn it up all the way.
There is two small fans, one on my memory, and one on my 865PE chipset. - noise minimal
There are 2 - 80mm on the Enermax 420watt PS ( like most people)
There are 2 - 80mm in the front of the case with the harddrives behind them
There's one (1) 120mm clear w/ blue LEDs on the window in the side blowing on mobo
There are 2 - 80mm on the back of the case below the PS
There is one (1) 80mm Tricolor led fan in top window (yes i have windows on all 3 sides)
and last but not least the chipset fan on my 3D card which is quiet as well.
most of the 80mm fans run about ~2700rpm and can not be adjusted, the only other fan i have that i adjust is the 120mm on the side it seems to be a little noisy when turned all the way up.

i would like to now what other people have setup? and what they think?

I have the following:

1 Enermax 120mm adjustable fan (in front for HDD cooling as an intake)
1 Antec 120mm (in back for exhaust)
1 Panaflo L1A 80mm (in PSU for exhaust)
1 Antec 92mm (in PSU for intake)
1 Intel Stock Fan
1 Chipset cooler (for 865PE northbridge)

so 6...its still VERY quiet.

PSU 120mm <23db
CPU 5.5 92mm Zalman ZF2 <20db
2 80mm outtake all at 5.5v, can't hear them.
1 80mm intake at 5.5, can't hear it either.

Noisiest things in my case are the two harddrives.

Yes, you certainly can have too many fans. With too many fans you'll end up destroying the natural airflow pattern through the case.

My P4 3.0 system runs 3 fans:

1 80mm PSU fan,

1 92mm Panaflo L1A @ 5V on the CPU,

1 120mm L1A @ 5V as case exhaust.

With 70°F ambient temps this setup gives me CPU idle temps of 32°C, 2xPrime95 load temps of 51°C. That's plenty cool enough. Why add more noisy fans to a setup like this that's already running plenty cool? Keeping it any cooler than that certainly won't make it last any longer, and even if it did add some amount of lifespan to the CPU I won't own it in another 12-24 months anyway.....

1 CPU fan
1 PSU Fan
1 fan in front of two hdd's

All NMB 80mm B10's at 12V.

It's pretty quiet, but not as quiet as I want.

No such thing as too many fans..unless you got so much airflow that your wires start becoming unplugged :D

Lets see:
(2) PSU
(2) 80mm CoolerMaster Blue LED exhaust
(1) 80mm Antec Intake
(1) 80mm Antec CPU fan
(1) 40mm VGA fan

1 zalman cpu fan
3 80mm at low rpm
2 92mm at low rpm
2 psu fans at low rpm
all on fan speed controllers
no need to create a racket if cooling is sufficient already, pumping even more air is just pointless.
