Is there such a thing as a software amp?

Say you plug some unamplified speakers into the front output on your soundcard. And cranked to max the windows volume just isn't giving you enough volume.

Without falling back on an actual amp, is there anything you can do software wise?

Getting power from software is like having a monitor make a cheeseburger. Just doesnt work
