Is there such a thing as a mini 2-port ethernet hub for a laptop?

Can't find one, and even some of the 4-port hubs are kinda big. I'd like something that almost looks like a splitter cable.

I just wanna have a hub with me. Most of the rooms at work only have 1 ethernet jack, which is usually occupied by a desktop. If I had a hub and cable then I could share the line (DHCP). Granted I wouldn't use it much but from time to time it would come in useful. I guess I'll just try to find as small a hub as possible to stick in my briefcase.

Gunbuster, USB hubs are for adding additional USB ports. They are not for networking of any kind.

I have one. I was thinking about it actually, although it's a touch expensive for this purpose.

Do all hubs have to be powered? The AC adapter is yet another piece I don't want to carry around.

A two port hub would be totally useless. It would only work as a cable extender and only let you connect one computer to the network, or connect two computers to each other(to do that you only net a crossover cable so it too is pointless).
Nowadays I don't know if there are any passive hubs (that don't need a power supply). You could however easily build your own.

It's assumed he meant 2 ports in addition to the uplink, as he explained what he needed it for.

If its mostly for work, concider jsut getting a cheap hub and leaving it there. They can be had for less than $20. Just remember that it will probably kick you from a 10/100 network down to a 10 network(assuming a cheap hub) and may cause some problems depending upon how the network is wired.

Pop on over to Cyberguys, they have EXACTLY what you are looking for. Look for the "Y-net 10BaseT Splitter", in their network->hubs/switches section. It's $21.35 Couldn't get a direct link for you, sorry.....

EDIT: It's a 10 megabit device - it works with 10 megabit and 10/100 megabit networks, but NOT with "pure" 100 megabit ethernet.

That's great. Thx!

Our network is 10/100 I think so it should be fine. Can't complain for $20. :) It will even work as a link for a 2-computer peer-to-peer without a crossover cable. Bonus!

Self-powered Ethernet splitter.

Try the D-Link 10baseT 5 port hub. Forgot the model number but it can be had for like $30 at CompUSA, cheaper online. I carry it around for my laptop since ethernet ports are always short at the sites I work at. It fits in your palm and has a small A/C adapter. It will give you 4 ports plus the uplink and works great.

you should also be able to find just a normal rj45 splitter. they're exactly the same as phone line spitters except rj45. if you have a decent computer shop in you're area you should be able to find one, and at prob less than half the cost of that one at cyberguys.

Doesn't an RJ-45 splitter need to be at both ends of the line? They have them at Cyberguys and they say you need one at both ends.

That thing at CyberGuys is also available at Radio Shack... or at least the studet I met who had one told me he got it there! They're semi-reliable at best, and are wired half-duplex... jsut so you know :)
