Is there such a thing as a "French Canadian?"

I say there there is no such thing that there is only a French Person and a Canadian person but not Frech Canadian person. My grilfriend on the other hand believes that she is half French Canadian. I do not believe that this is right because there is no such place as French Canadia. I do believe that there are people who are both french and Canadian and should call them selves that, french AND canadian. If I was half mexian and half ductch I would not call myself a Mexican dutchian that being my point please vote.

I agree, the only way to be a French Canadian is to be from Canada AND speak French...but they're still Canadian, not French at all...actually, I'm not sure if Canadian can be counted as a nationality, since its hardly a country and all

Ummm... The French speaking citizens of Quebec are "French Canadians". They have a different ethnic lineage than most English speaking Canadians. They also maintain a distinct identity and culture, which is why they identify themselves as "French Canadians".

Sure there are French Canadians... They're from Quebec (and a few in Nova Scotia too). Back in the day, what is now Quebec was a French colony, and what is now Ontario (pretty much anyways) was a British colony. They (surprisingly ha) had a war, the Brits kicked the Frogs' asses, but because they're such good sports, they allowed them to join their colony, yet keep their culture. So now there were a few colonies in that area, they decided to join to form the early Canada. Now, what used to be that main French colony is Quebec, and is primarily a French speaking region. Most people are bilingual, especially in the cities, but they are still considered to be French Canadian because they have a decidingly identifiable culture in the region.


Also if there's no French Canadians, then how can there be African Americans?

I am half French-Canadian. The term is quite accurate. Go visit Montreal or Quebec City or even Hull. You'll be a believer.

SilverPig is essentially correct. They were Upper (Ontario) and Lower (Quebec) Canada.

As a side note the Acadians fled the east coast of Canada during the influx of United Empire Loyalists and settled in Louisiana and are now called Cajens (sp?). Hence why they speak an odd dialect of french.

Hey I'm a certified Californian American, lol. I don't believe that there is such a place as France-Canada, just like there is no Africa-America. Why can't we just call black people black and white people white and Canadian people silly for calling themselves something wrong

Though this is the case for "English Americans," this is not the case for a number of other ethnicities. There are distinct ethnic backgrounds to many people in America; it has little to do with being PC. Italian Americans and Irish Americans are two distinct ethnic backgrounds I can immediately think of; in addition, there are Finnish Americans, etc.

The first "title" is to denote your ethnicity, the other your nationality.

They are Americans because that is the dominant culture. There is not really a distinctly dominant sub culture in the US that compares in it's size, strength, influence, and geographic localization as the one in Quebec. We are Canadians because that is the dominant culture here. However, in Quebec, there is a VERY distinct dominant culture and language that is easily identifiable as different from the rest of the country. Heck, half the time, it's like being in a different country.

the people of african lineage in the US are called african american "are they all from africa?" they are american not african same way the french speaking people in Canada of french lineage are French Canadians, they do not have to be from France
