don't know much about firewire... but i built a peer-to-peer network (400Mb/s!!!) using it for guy. he only needs two computers on it anyway, but i got to thinking it would be cool if you could add more. are there firewire hubs?
 
i really know nothing about firewire. is it one of those ones where you daisy-chain components? so you're suggesting daisy-chaining computers the same way?

edit: anyone know the cable length limitations of this stuff?

That's really cool... I was curious about the cost versus Gigabit. My guess is firewire and gigabit adapters cost about the same, right? But a gigabit switch would cost a ton, I bet.
 
yes there are firewire hubs & they cost $$$. You can just daisy-chain firewire together & save some money. I think you can daisy-chain up to 63 firewire devices together. The cable lenght limit is 15 ft between each powered firewire device.

At work, I have my firewire hard drive plugs into an external firewire Le Cie DVD-RW drive, which plugs into a Yamaha firewiire CDRW.


 
im not a firewire guy, but that firewire hub wouldnt work the same as an ethernet hub .. it just allows you to have more connections, it wont broadcast or anything ..

I guess if you were daisy-chaining, then your speeds would go down the way they did with those old 10Base2 and 10Base5(?) networks. Plus, you'd have to have all the computers on, and functioning properly. Sounds like too much trouble.
 
well devices wouldnt slow down really, yes the power adapters would have to be on ... but this would not be a way to network computers using firewire .. it sounds like a good bus topology .. but it wouldnt work that way .. ..
