Graphics cards for designing games?
nVidia Quadro series, 3DLabs WildCat series, ATi FireGL series.
Matrox and Appian also have some models that can be quite useful in some instances due to their extremely good multi-monitor impementation which would be extremely useful for graphics design work.

A specific recommendation is impossible as I've no idea what applications your using, what OS, system configurations, price range. What type of graphics design you will be doing etc.

Agreed. Need more details. For games testing you'd want to go with whatever you customers (people buyin gyour game) are going to be using... that seems like it should be obvious... yes?

I would assume that for both game testing and game development you would want to use the hardware that your target audience would be playing the game on.

Hardware help, Games development.

I am about to go into games development, ?Tomb Raider? standard and will be operating on two systems. My budget isn?t that great so still have to watch the pennies. I will want to update system 1, this being my current system, which I hope to use for testing games and to carry out desktop publishing.

System 2 will be built from scratch and will be used solely for games development.

Below is a list of the components of system 1 used for testing.
My budget for the upgrading of this system is £1200

VIA MS-6309LE5 Motherboard
Celeron 600Mhz processor
128MB Memory
15GB HDD
LS-120 Drive
Proline DVD1000
Diamond viper V550
15"LG Monitor
Windows 98 SE2
Internet Keyboard
Microsoft Basic Mouse
Apollo P2100 Printer

What needs to be kept or upgraded to meet the requirements?

System 2 correct me if I?m wrong will be a bigger system to be able to cope with the development side of things and for this my budget is £3000.
One thing I was wondering as well was, is there a graphics card out there that is specifically designed for games rendering?

I need to take into consideration the requirements of market games now and expect new games to have the same system requirements.

Thank you for any help and advice you could give me.

Matt

By nature, gamers usually have hot-rod computers.

I recommend poking around the forums and looking at various "My Rig" entries in people's signatures.

You're gonna find a pretty serious need for an update (IMO)

Games which run well on a Celly and TNT are going to be way behind any new offerings (even semi-old ones)

You have to remember, "eye-candy" is a large part of the fun for gamers. Most of the people who knock it

either have crappy computers or aren't really gamers. (you know, the anal IT types)

I think you are going to need AT LEAST a PIII comp. and GeForce3 (or ATI equivalent) video card.
