Is there spyware on my XP home edition?

I've just heard that one of the reasons XP is a disaster with people who network is that there is spyware pre-installed on XP, or on a patch of XP-and on general principle, I find that disturbing. Does anyone know if this is true?

I'm using my pc at work, an arcaic PII which freezed up on me while typing the first message. I wasn't sure if it had gone through so I entered it again.
