Is there somewhere you can complain about the red dots in movies?

Went to see Master and Commander over the weekend and they were all over the friggin place. It pretty much ruined the whole movie going experience. Contact the theater, MPAA or what?

They throw in red dots in occasional frames in an attempt to thwart privacy, yet I watched a downloaded version after I paid to see it and lo and behold no dots.

Bitch to the manager of the theater.
Youll get free passes in return
did it ALL the time in Highschool, no matter if the experience was perfect or not. Saw alot of free movies in my HS days. Man kids are jerks

In many theaters (not all), there is a long series of red dots throughout the film at various points throughout the movie. The dots seem to be in a group of 5, as far as I can tell, but they only take up one frame. In any case, the purpose of these dots are to track movie theaters that leak telesyncs (Telesync = 'TS' = Movie recorded by hand in a theater and distributed on the net), because each theater has a different and unique dot pattern.

"Better" theaters seem to lack these dots (at least the Arclight in Los Angeles does) but smaller theaters and most theater chains (AMC, Regal) have them.

In any case, yes they are VERY annoying if you catch them. At one point last week when I watched Last Samurai I saw the dots probably 10-15 times.

Blame the MPAA for this idiocy.

Didn't see them in Last Samurai. Well, I saw glimpses of large black dots, but I think those are movie edits.

Here is a post on HardOCP about the dots. Look about halfway down the page under "Seeing Red...Dots":

SURPRISE! Miramax has neither an email address nor phone numbers for such concerns. I was told I could be given a general fax number, but of course they could not promise that those "could be forwarded along." So it seems that Miramax does not want to hear from me, you, or any of their customers that give them their hard earned money. And somewhere on a personal level, I feel as though I just got screwed out of an experience that I had been waiting to really enjoy. Quentin ought to be pissed that Miramax turned his move into a Crap Code experience, I know I am.

Pisses me off too.

Edit: Some of you didn't see them because they are different on every copy. Some copies of the film don't have them at all. I believe the idea behind them is to ruin bootleg copies of the film, and also be able to trace the bootleg copy back to it's source, since every copy with dots is unique.

Spoke to the manager and scored free passes. He did not know about the red dots and would be watching the movie to check it out.

There's a cure for that, bring your own red dot, except yours would be attach to a .45mm, then the red dots would stop. Just trace it back to the owner and aim that red dot right at his/her fcuking head.

Whoever that manager is, he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground if he is truly unaware of this.

Anyone employed at a theatre that works with film or even previews the built prints would know about the dots.
