Is there some type of App so I can ping a server?

I have no idea wghaat trace routing is, but my Dad told me to look for that kind of stuff.

And also, how exactly would I go abut running command line to ping a server?

I need these things because I'm having network programs and have no idea what's wrong.

in command console, type "ping ip_of_server_to_ping" (no quotataion marks) eg ping www.google.com or ping 127.0.0.1
