Is there some proper way to switch monitors?

I frequently move my desktop from my dorm room to my home. I have a 19" LCD (DVI) in my dorm and a 21" CRT (D-sub) at home. When I leave the dorm, all I do is shut off the computer w/out changing any settings. When I get home, I plug everything in, and the monitor never detects anything, I start the computer and the monitor just proceeds to suspend mode. Only after numerous restarts does the monitor all of a sudden detect a signal and I get post. This same thing happens whenever I'm changing monitors (even when going from D-Sub to D-Sub), is there something I'm doing wrong?

I always set all my Windows display settings to low (640x480x60Hz). This way I won't damage the new monitor if my settings are out of it's display range.

I've got a 19" lcd, and even though I move my computer about 12 times a year, I never have to change anything on the monitor. Just unplug, then plug back in.
