Is there software available that will let you use the infared port on your laptop as a universal remote control?

A laptop is awfully cumbersome to be used as a remote.

Plus, AFAIK most devices like that really aren't intended to have the range that remote controls do.

Just buy a good universal remote & call it good.

I looked and looked, never found anything though. There was a program for the palmOS, but the IR port on the palm was so weak that you had to be fairly close. You could buy a module for the Handspring that included a more robust IR sender along with the software, but I never tried it out.

I don't know man, I think those IR ports are mad weak. Even the Palm ones as mentioned above. The only one capable of being used as a remote is the Sony Clie t615c and t665c, not sure about the n70's... and it was because Sony had that in mind when they were designing the product.
